What Brings You Here?

I've been detecting with A LOT of different people over the decades. I have to say it's a lot of fun to meet new people and get to know them. Even more fun to be on adventures with them.

Interesting to think about what makes us pick up a detector in the first place and then what keeps us coming back.

For myself, detecting offers diversion from everyday life, the fascination of history, the excitement of adventure and exploring, the anticipation of the hunt and the satisfaction in reminiscing past adventures with friends. Each step we take has its' own rewards. On occasion, I even find something worth keeping and showing to friends and family.

It's a pleasure, when the weather turns and the snow if falling outside and there's nowhere to go, to look at photos and finds. I've found some pretty cool stuff along the way. Some I've kept. Some I've sold. Don't have room for all of it. My sweet wife has limits and I do to.

Anyway, share with us what brings you here? Any favorite finds?

Rich, You said it all. It was as though I wrote it also.

For me, it kept my sanity after my son died back in 2000. Till this day when I'm really feeling sad, I enjoy the thought of getting out and doing some detecting. You never know what you'll find. Might not find anything of value but that's OK, I was busy and enjoying a peaceful outing. Then when that special "keeper" is unveiled from the ground, it's quite a rush of happiness. We all need "happy". When you're looking at that special item, oh how you wish it could talk. The history, the hands it has passed, the occasion it was given. Oh so many possibilities of it's history.

I guess one of my favorite finds has to be a men's 14K gold 5 diamond wedding ring. At the time, my Dad was suffering from arthritis and heart problems. He couldn't wear his wedding ring for it was too small to go over his knuckle. I was showing him my ring that I found and he tried it on and it fit perfectly. He went to take it off and I said, "NO, that's YOUR ring now".

Oh, he was so proud of that ring. Normally Dad would have NEVER taken anything that he didn't earn himself. He was a very proud man. But this, he loved. He had never had diamonds before. He showed that ring off to all his coffee buddies. Yes, he was quite proud of it. He wore that ring till it was too large for his finger. He was very sick and was soon to meet the Lord. Now I have a very special ring that has another priceless memory.

In my book, it doesn't get any better than that. Thank you for the wonderful memories and HH, Nancy
