John while I don't have alot of time in the water under my belt. I can say this. You lock onto something small slipping through the scoop and it will keep moving or if the target is light weight like a tab/small piece of aluminum. I have shifted targets around by not fully getting it in the scoop . This was with my 4" RTG beach scoop. Since that learning experience I have brought a 6" diameter scoop, small learning curve and seems in most instances I can acquire the target on the first or second scoop.

Now if the target is real deep and suspended in tbe clay layer below the sand then I'll have to work for it a little more.

Hope that helps, as far as measured depth I haven't heard anyone with a method to measure the holes depth when chest deep in water ;)

if you are using a standard single frequency vlf machine in wet salt sand it will drive you crazy with falsing,,,, what machine are you using? minelabs excal and soveriegn gt will hit coin about a foot deep ......ive hit rings already at 14 inches deep--the exception not the norm...

Your asking a question that's impossible to answer! Different machines get different depths, different sands, fresh or salt water? If your signal disappears its because of a few reasons. the MAIN one is you hit a piece of iron and its been in the sand a long time and give a halo effect of a good target. Once you break the halo the target disappears. I have found countless nails that gave a good signal only to disappear while fanning my hand. If you go down over a foot and still don't have it, I would give up. A can at 2' down will set my machine off like its a good target!

Another reason is you missed the target and made it fall in the hole deeper. Again Don't dig to China. Its your call to keep looking for it or to move on.

Some machines.... like the Xcal will sometimes loose a target because of the depth once it moves. give it a second..... rescreen the hole and it will be there. Some objects especially FLOATER if you scoop them out and dont see them in the scoop once you dump the sand..... they move. Are these repeatable targets..... if not its falsing, from minerals, salt, or rusted metal. I dont like enclosed scoops especially small ones as they fill serface or floating targets move..... normally out of the scoop. With the Xcal if you get a repeatable target..... the target IS there.

I've dug targets in dry sand with my bhid 14 inches deep. In the water it's hard to judge the depth but i have a 6" rtg scoop and have had to really dig down to retreive a target so i say may 8"plus.
