Depends on where you mean by "bay area". That can stretch from San Rafael to Santa Cruz. Or cities and beaches within the bay, like Oakland, etc....

I'm in the Monterey / Salinas area. So my beach domain is all the Monterey bay beaches, for the past 35-ish years. I know guys from further north that like to hit Half-moon bay after storms. Or beaches up by Stinson area after storms. Most of the hardcore beach hunters around here are strictly storm/erosion chasers. And detest dry-sand or summer hunting.

It also depends on what you mean by "water". Did you mean actually IN the water ? (as in wade, snorkel, scuba, etc....). And/or did you mean lake beaches ? If so, then those are other questions/topis altogether.

Tom, how is the beach detecting between Santa Barbara up to around Pismo? Thought I'd hit Pismo first time out with my new Sand Shark.

Probably right now sanded in. You'll be relegated to dry sand. Wet sand is probably sterile.

There are a lot of locals at Pismo Beach that hit the beach daily and now they are starting at 3 AM with headlamps in and out of the water, doesn't mean it is hunted out but not at all like it use to be.

Sheesk, we don't have that many md'rs here. About the only exception would be those "regulars" who ply the dry sand at Santa Cruz Main beach at the close of each weekend. They are typically not wise to erosion hunting though. They just dink around in the dry sand. So we've even seen times when we're out on the wet in good erosion pockets, digging non-stop. And the dry-sand hunters are oblivious to it. Despite seeing us digging hand over fist, they just continue their methodical patterns looking for recent drops in the dry.

Hmm.. Pismo doesn't sound very promising then. Guess I'll need to head south.
I'd have to leave my house @ 1 AM to be at any beach by 3. I'm @ 6000', up in the mountains. Probably better off land detecting up here..

I'm in Los Padres Forest, near Mt. Pinos. Love it up here, but I'm away from the beach. Used to live in Huntington, 1/2 mile from the water.

Pinenut, I hunt Pismo 3 or 4 days a week year-round. I am the web master for the local club (Central Coast Treasure Hunters Association) and I am happy to help you out with local spots.

LowBoy, sorry this got a bit hijacked. There has to be people in and North of SF (Bodega Bay, Fort Bragg, etc) willing to help a brother out.
