Hello everyone new to the hobby and DFX, purchased the Digging deeper with the DFX book and am in the process of reading it-what a machine! Overwhelming with adjustments and what not-hope I can figure it out. It is an older used machine with a stock 9.5" and came with a 12" Hot Shot coil. I live in Minnesota, not sure if our ground would be considered heavily mineralized or not. Plan on using it mainly for coin shooting and occasional beach hunting. What is the opinion of this Hot shot 12" coil? from what I have read on this forum it would not be a good choice for trashy areas. What is this package worth if I find it is too complicated for a newbie.

Don't get frustrated, the DFX is pretty easy to learn. It's just a one step at a time machine. Start with the Presets and master your skills and technique. Thats the most important. Then lean how ( and why ) to make simple adjustments without the manual on your lap. Build from there. Second important thing, ask questions. Everyone loves to brag about how much they know, and the rest of us love to know that we aren't the only ones with the same questions.

This thing is insane, I was out today as our snow melt is well under way, the ground is still too frozen to dig. I found so many targets in just my yard. I noticed the VDI numbers all over the place and found the same targets changing as I swept over them. I was having problems ground balancing due to the number of targets and the limited open ground in which to ground balance. I hope I can get a handle on this- can't wait to start digging. I am going to start with the coin/jewelry program as I am looking to tot lot shop and then progress to beaches as the thaw occurs. I appreciate the several posts I have read and the responses to my post. I wish you all the best as our season is about to begin. I will post my finds and share with you my frustrations/successes. God bless to all!

It sounds like you might have some EMI, try the correlate mode and see if it helps. I hunted almost always in correlate for very smooth operation. If that doesn't seem to help, turn down the gain a notch.

Bells and whistles are nice, but nothing will substitute for the basic understanding of the hobby.

i got a used dfx same deal with 950 and 12hotshot i reccomned the 950 untill you are very comfortable with the dfx as the hotshot pinpoint is tricky among other things. try starting with jewelery beach and go from there most important is v.c.o. on ratchet pinpointing off for actually finding a target. plus dealing with electrical interference and trash can be a pain. get out in some low target woods with a good size shovel to get the hang of it. whatever you do DONT sell it ,in time all will make sense and you will see the investment pay you back tenfold, you will be amazed at what you WILL FIND . i was the same when i got mine[???????] digging deeper is a big help but dont worry about too much tweaking right away.

I have had a DFX since it first came out. This weekend I was out in a couple tot lots that had obvious signs of being detected. I tried it anyway and I was digging all the deep coins. This detector is great. Trying to decide if I want to get a water detector or a V3 somewhere in the future, but for now I am getting lots of results with my DFX

Highley recomend a water machine--i go on vacation and get up at 530 am --coffee and out to the beach to hunt the sand. I like this schedule because i enjoy my vacation alot more and with no one on the beach at this time it is all mine and then after breakfast i hunt the water where i don't bother anyone. I have a BHID by Whites and i am happy with it and have become comfortable using it.Just waiting for that nice find.
