ORDERED 18X15 EXCELERATOR BUTTERFLY COIL

I couldn't get anyone to loan me (don't have the $4000-$5000 right now) a GPX pi for a week to M.D. a very old site from the early 1800's in Southern California that I have a gut feeling there will be caches...no problem...Soooo....I ordered from Kellyco the deepest searching coil I could get for my Safari...an SEF 18''x15'' Excelerator butterfly coil.
I am fully prepared for the extra weight ( I have the bungee and harness etc) but I'll put a few inches on the biceps at the same time so that's a good thing:clapping:!!!!
I have other coils which have served me very well but not as big as this one (mainly because of the weight factor) so I am very excited at trying it out at this site and also on the SoCal beaches and hopefully get that deeper gold and silver that others may have missed with smaller coils.
It has been a while since I found gold and I'm looking forward to doing the GOLD DANCE again real soon!!! :wiggle: I'll keep you posted!

I received my 18X15 SEF Excellerator butterfly coil finally and headed to the beach to try it out for the first time. The coil being so big did add to the weight of the Safari but it wasn't too bad for the time I spent out there.
I was fully expecting to find deep rings in the sand but only found a few coins. Considering I was only able to spend 2 hours there and the beaches have been hard hit since the weather has cooled off and also there has been few visitors to the beaches, I wasn't too disappointed. The rain has been very heavy for almost a week all around California so I'm anxiously waiting to go back out and really test this big coil out!!
I'm beginning to get cabin fever so I hope this rain let's up real soon so I can do some more swinging!!!:detecting:

Hi dfs1,
In regards to the 18x15 excellerator coil, I bought it primarily to metal detect an old stagecoach stop here in Southern California that I haven't been able to get permission to detect YET!!! I have only taken it out one time to the beach and really didn't conduct a proper test, so I haven't taken it out on it's 'maiden voyage' just yet! :detecting:
I wanted to go as deep as I can because I have this gut feeling that there is a strong possibility there is a cache/caches or at least random silver and gold coins in the grounds?? but first things first, I've got to get permission to find out!!! I'm prepared to dig lot's of iron and junk (I'm not a relic hunter) but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.!
It wouldn't be practical to take it to the parks to truly test it because of all the trash it would detect and pinpointing would be tough because of it's size so I'll post the results and hopefully many great finds soon!!

Look at the 2 Depth Tests charts in this pdf report of the SEF coils. The 18x15" SEF does not go deeper than the smaller sized (15 x12" and 12 x 10" ) SEF coils on coin sized objects, in fact it has less depth. Only more depth on a larger Crotal bell. So your 18x15" SEF only has an advantage on coverage and on larger than coin sized objects.

David,
Thanks very much for that information...much appreciated...I originally bought it for larger targets (caches) than intending to use it for coin sized targets. Actually, I tried this coil at the beach recently on some coins, gold and silver rings that I buried at different depths in the sand. Sure enough, I found that there was no improvement on the detecting depth with the 18X15 as opposed to my smaller coils! I will be metal detecting some of those open fields there in England next month so maybe I'll give it a thorough testing then!!

I have and Exxcelerator 12 X 15 that I'm still adjusting to. I used it the other day in a field of very hard ground. I have all of my coils on lower shafts and I couldn't figure out what was going on with the 12 X15 until I got home and thought about it. I realized that it have detected a tiny brass snap at 13 inches. I'm attaching a web site which does a review on some of the Exxcelerator coils that you might find interesting. I think that these coils are better than you might imagine it is just a matter of using them until you grasp their power- what ever it is. They do seem to reach deep and wide. As far as pin pointing with them-- try this trick-- take a 2 foot by 2 foot piece of cardboard and tape a quarter to the back somewhere on it then turn it over and keep pinpointing until you get it. Keep us posted as to you progress with you new coil.

I'm curious what ever happened on this thread? I follow it or check back from time to time as I own all of the SEF sizes except the 18x15. Probably the only reason is because I already have an 18" coil for major ground coverage. I think it's a mono, but I'm not certain. How about an update?
