shovel for frozen dirt

i am looking to make a strong sharp shovel to break thru the permafrost , i was wondering if anyone could post any pic of one they made or bought so i can get a good idea of what i need to do

I got a regular trenching shovel with a 12" tapered blade. I cut the blade down to 9". I then cut the handle at 5". I tapered the first 2" of the handle and re-fitted the handle and put a metal pin through it. The shovel now measures 31". The long metal shaft of the shovel makes it very strong and you can still get your boot on it to open frozen ground. I have a hook on my utility belt which makes it easy to carry. HH TomB
