Button terminology and dating?

What is the accepted name for the piece on the back of buttons that is used to attach it to clothing, ferrule, loop?
If the loop is a floating style, ie it can move in its mounting, is this considered modern, 20th century?
When did buttons start being assembled as 2 piece, ie pressed together?

Found what I "think" might be an old militia button in my back yard! Canadian Militia. Has a Kings Crown design on it. Sorry, no pics.
Thanks for any info/help.
