Knife found in woods

Hey all, my dad is a fire fighter and yesterday he was fighting a fire in the middle of no where and they had to use a rope just to climb the side of the mountain to fight the fire. Anyway, in the middle of all of that was this knife. It's hard to believe that a knife could be out in the middle of no where like this unless if was for good reason (murder). No one in there right mind would have hunted there... but it's possible I guess. Anyway here are pics of it. http://www.flickr.com/photos/59884159@N06/7287695174/in/photostream http://www.flickr.com/photos/59884159@N06/7287697954/in/photostream http://www.flickr.com/photos/59884159@N06/7287700108/in/photostream

It says something at the base of the blade but it is unreadable and I cant get a good enough picture to display it.

If there's anything you could tell us about the knife such as age, etc. It would be very appreciated. Thanks a bunch!

It appears to be a very old ,probably one of the first, survival knives. The end of the haft has a screw cap with a knurled edge. Curious to know what is in the handle. If you want to try to open it squirt a little lube around it and let it soak in for a couple of days .Love a mystery.

Thanks longbone! We say it had a screw cap but we tried to open it with all of our might (with our hands) but we didnt want to take a pair of pliers to it just in case it was old. Glad we didnt. I'll see if a little lube helps things and get back with ya! Thanks a bunch!
