Went for another hunt with my new found friend and we seem to be doing jsut fine finding the OLD stuff. Can anyone possatively I D this one for me... Possably a date ? It was found in the water and about a foot and a half deep in the sand. The spring door for the lock works perfect. The chain has long since rotted away from the salt. Any help would be great... Whydah

Whydah that is a railroad switch lock. I have never found one, but I got one from my grandfather. It looks exactly like yours, but it does not have U.S. punched into it like yours. My lock has the initials of a local railroad punch into it. So I would guess U.S. are initials for a railroad. Some of these locks can be quite valable depending on railraod it came from. I believe it is from the 1880's or so. Nice find!

likely made by Speckmann Lou, KY. If it has any of this information it will be stamped on the shackle.
I would be very careful or not clean at all. What kind of hole for the key as there are three designs?
