Whites IDX Pro questions

I just received a Whites IDX Pro detector with "Bills" modifications. I have been detecting for 25+ years but could use any advice on the best way to set it up for use in the late 1800's to early 1900's yards and parks. Air testing it in my cellar, I noticed that I can get 2" to 3" more depth when the detector is in the "Black Sand" mode than when it is the "Normal" mode. Have any of you IDX Pro users experienced this? Please let me know. I need all the help I can get. Thank you. Dave

Dave, yes using the black sand mode and minimum discrimination will give you at least 3 inches more in a air test. How much more you get on targets in ground depends on your ground. I have some pretty bad ground and I'm getting better hits on deeper coins especially dimes set up this way. By expanding the discrimination using the black sand feature you will notice improved sensitivity to most targets especially small gold rings and chains. Mine hits small gold better than my 14 kHz. Compass Gold Scanner Pro and way better than my Minelab Sovereign Elite. I hunt most of the time with my modified IDX Pro using the black sand feature and minimum discrimination which is basically a motion all metal mode. Set up this way depth is as good any detector I've used.

I just acquired an IDX Pro and will be taking it out tomorrow for the first time. I am new to metal detectors and am wondering how this unit will work on the beach. My understanding is that I should stay away from the wet sand. Would Bill's Modifications aid in this regard?

The unit seemed to work well on the beach though i was told that wet sand would be problematic. Of course i tried it by the waters edge but only for 5-10 minutes. I did not get any signals during that time. Can anyone enlighten me with regard to using the IDX Pro in sand and wet sand?

My very first detector was an IDX Pro. I wish I had never sold it.
How much would one of those babys cost me today...reasonably, that is.

Can anyone still modify the IDX Pro? Is it worth it? Can a person do it themselves? Can a small coil still be bought for the IDX Pro? Sorry for so many questions but just starting out with the machine.

www.surfscanner.com to have it done by a pro. There is an 8 inch coil, 6 inch coil and the smaller still snooper coil. Whites website has a coil compatibility chart . Get a 6" black max coil. You will love it.

May I ask: Would this suffice for a nugget shooting detector in mineralized ground? Especially volcano rock area? TIA

penguineman......

The Mr. Bill's mods are adjustable Threshold and Ground Balance controls accesed by outside knobs instead of internal adjustments with a small screwdriver. This makes it easier to make initial tuning adjustments. There are no differences between the IDX Pro and Classic IDX other than decals. IF you are only gettin 4 inches depth, something is wrong with your adjustments, are you using pre-set dial markings on the dials? On my IDX Pro, my ground balance is set to a "slightly" positive response as coil nears the ground while in all-metal mode, the Disc. is set at two hash marks below Ring Range pre-set at 9 O'Clock and I can run my Sensitivity at Max most of the time. I can tell how deep or big a detected object is while lifting the coil over the target while still swinging the coil in tight little swings. Hope this answers some question for you.
