I'm sure you guys have looked at an area and said ,"I wish I could detect there". Well I'm at that point. I have no problem approaching people. But, I'm stumped for words on how to approach someone and tell them I want to dig holes in your lawn , and find jewelry, coins, and old relics. Of course I'm making a joke but on the other hand that is what we do. I can't seem to get my head this idea. Any help would greatly appreciated thanks

If they have side walks tell them you are detecting between the side walk and the road and would like to hunt there yard. and if you dont get on that way do this> I think if you just go down and buy you a orange vest and wear it when they ask you what your doing tell them you are locating pipes they will say ok and walk off..LOL

I find the best is to be honest. Tell them your name, that you have a hobby of detecting and love to find old relics, tokens and coins. Ask would you mind if I detect your property. Then (hard part) wait for an answer. If no, say I do treat your lawn carefully, you won't even know I was here. If they still say no go to the next house.

Look them in the eyes so they can read yours, smile, introduce yourself and say what is on your mind. It helps to get some business cards made with your phone number, picture and other information on it. That helps you in MANY ways. Be courteous, sincere and assure them that you will return to them any personal items found.

Don't have a canned speech, dress shabby or in cameo and don't bring your detector to the door.

Good luck.

Bells and whistles are nice, but nothing will substitute for the basic understanding of the hobby.
