MX6-7 tones vs. MX5-8tones
MX6-ability to turn off groundtraac vs. MX5 continuous groundtrac.
MX6- no backlite vs. MX5 backlite.
Different coils
Those are the basic differences.

If you're talking about m6 don't know about mx6,
Has knobs, no notch, no threshold, no backlight, no volume adjust, no standby, has Trac lock, less appealing tones imho. Opposite points stated for mx5. Spider coil on mx5, 950 on m6. Have both and prefer mx5 both are good machines.

If I had to choose in the same condition and the same price, I would probably chose Matrix M6.

I prefer the fine tuning of target discrimination on the m-6 instead of the notch on the mx-5. Also the tones sound better to me on the m-6 than the mx-5 and yes I used to owned both and kept my m-6 .

IMHO the MX5 has just a tad bit more depth in certain situations but the M6 is a more stable solid machine and is dead on when it comes to target id. The tones on the M6 is so much better in my opinion and you cant beat how solid and rugged the M6 is. Its a very simple machine but very powerful. I have both but the M6 has my vote.

I never owned an MX6, but am pleased with my MX5, AFTER I found out the battery pack has to be secured by giving it a good bump when inserting. If not done, it mimics emi problems and I almost sent it in. I also love the balance on mine-offsets the weighty feel and is more comfortable than some of my lighter machines.

I've had both and prefer the MX5. True all metal mode, built well, good balance, deeper, 1, 2, or 8 tones. Not knocking the MX6. It's a great machine also.

Hi Shenandoah....Correct me if I'm wrong, I thought you had a audio glitch with your MX5 and got rid of it.

I've had mine for just over 2 years and sure it makes some weird noises in the small iron trash sites..But I run mine in 2 tone and have learned what it is saying to me.

" If in doubt, dig it out"

I use various analog detectors, knobs and switches rule.

No I took it in to my White's dealer, which is also a service center, and they removed the diode that was causing the problem. The sounds aren't as clean as most digital detectors, but it gives a little bit of an analog sound, which I like. It might not be for everyone though.

For me the MX5 has more features and is deeper than the M6, the older MXT Tracker, and as deep as the MXT Pro in my area. The MX5 does have ground track locking in the Pinpoint Mode, see page 11 of the owners manual, which is an All Metal mode & I have used to search an area under some conditions. Notch discrimination for me has an advantage as well. Let's say you are searching an area heavy in pull tabs. Pull tabs id at 22. You can block out 22 and maybe miss a few nickels. With the M6 if you discriminate out pull tabs everything below 22 is also discriminated out, as in say a small gold ring or charm that has an id of 8-10. With the added features of Suspend Mode and Back Light, the MX5 comes out ahead for me hands down.

I THOUGHT I had read the owner's manual! Didn't know about that lock in pinpoint. I also like the 8 tone mode- I literally walk thru some areas listening to the tones and it's amazing how the human mind can instantly tell tones apart. And since you mentioned the 22 ID, in some areas I ignore the nickel tone at ID 22-24 as statabs. I recover the 18-20. Sure I may miss a nickel or two, but in some areas-nice. On serious days, of course, I dig all hard hits. And this week I found a fine gold chain at 10 ID. After making sure the battery pack is snug, I am liking mine more every day.
