I am slowing down to learn this machine. And have started to appreciate it more .this is one of the best lessons lve learned metal detecting , and embarassing ! Its sad that I got more responses on this , than when l asked for advice , but thank you all for the truth even if it hurts some times. I've tried to change the not happy name but can,t seem to do it. Sorry fellas from gramps green

It happens man. To start off with, though I'm no MX user,it helps with ANY machine in the learning stage to....
Turn DOWN the gain
Turn DOWN the sensitivity
Turn UP the discrimination

Will you get "maximum performance"? Absolutely NOT in any way, shape or form. High gain will cause falsing, high sensitivity will tell you about every micron of ANYTHING and low disc will allow the second thing to happen when you don't want it to. Run some VERY mild settings and stay away from known junky areas to get going in the right direction. Some machines have to be run wide open EVERYTHING to get performance, some not so much. When you get more in tune with it you can start going a little hotter with your settings and re-work the areas you've covered in the milder settings. That in itself will teach you something about the machine, and what you can get away with for settings, and where.
IMHO....

I dont own either machine but have read enough posts to know they are both quality units in the right hands... every machine has its strengths and weaknesses, it's your duty as a user to figure out how the characteristics of each compare,,once you figure that out you will which one to use depending where and what type of hunting you're doing... hey, if after some time you still dont care for it get rid of it and move on ... like idx eluded to, once you master how the sensetivity affects target response you will know when to dial it up... i love my old whites 5900 for the same reason you dont like the mx and that is super sensetivity... sensetivity equals micro gold on freshwater beaches IF you have the patience and are willing to dig lots and lots of trash.. ..... good luck...

I don't own the sport yet either but hope to one day. I have a Tesoro Tejon that I had some of the same feelings but as I learned it's language over time I realized how great that detector is. It has some amazing abilities and I love it. The sport is sounding very similar. Good luck and hope to read more on your progress. :beers:

Gramps, just a word of advice, no one will remember your post in 6 months.. You drop your $$ and you had expectations for whatever reason, that were not initially met. You vented in the wrong crowd, no harm done. You were not mean to any one, you just expressed your disappointment and frustration with your new toy. Why people get soo fired up about someones initial opinion of a product that they did not personally design and build I don't get.. Ford Chevy Mopar etc:-)
Good luck with your machine, if you stop going MD as much because you don't like your machine, sell it, and get what you like. You are not obligated to suffer 500 hours to learn the machine.. it should not take that long..

I D X monster, you are so right on, l took my MX sport off Craig's list a few days ago because of finding out all of the things you have told me , total confirmation ,of your advice. The smaller coil helped as well in the right area. I have found this machine to be a beast on lower gold range just excelent! Now its still a hot rock and pop top hound , but fresh water gold is my hunt most of the time. My huntin buddy has a MX sport as well and we've accepted The extra digging that comes with this fine detecter. So idx monster your right on one day l turned down everying and the volume and found more change and a gold plated bracelet thanks from gramps green

Not to worry Gramps....there are more people on this site that know about detectors and detecting than anywhere else, when it comes to the everyday user. ALL of us have gone through what you're experiencing,to varying degrees. It's both exciting and sometimes frustrating operating a new machine, but in the end it's another tool for the detecting toolbox. The more you use it the more you'll get in tune with its operation. Many guys will gladly pass on info about the MX,but that's where I fall short due to not having one.
Carry on....

wondered what all the fuss was about and read the review probably your only mistake was where you wrote it  geese I have written some scathing reviews about XYZ in my time and don't care what anyone thinks just venting.

way I see it I have 2 choices spend time learning the detector or sell it some are worth learning some are not , if there was only one detector and we all had to use it what a boring conversation that would be.

I will add some of my best detectors I plain wanted to wrap around a tree when I 1st got them but I persevered with them and they are now my fav's so if something shows a glimpse of what it can do and the rest is tree time maybe do 100hrs then reassess if I want to do 100 more :sleepy:

don't know why people get upset if someone doesn't see life like they do, but then I have told a few what to stick in their pipe :bouncy: either way its a metal detector :buds:

neither of them float my boat but feel free to use what ever you wish

AJ
