I'd say that you should keep saving up and get the ProPointer. It'll dance circles around the cheap pinpointers. I started with a cheap AutoMax because it came with the machine I bought and quickly ran out of patience with it. Everyone I've hunted with has been through various models and always seemed to settle on the ProPointer in the end. There's a reason.....

Garrett AT-Pro, Minelab E-Trac, 2 Pro Pointers and a probe rod.

If you stand up and be counted, from time to time you may get yourself knocked down. But remember this: A man flattened by an opponent can get up again. A man flattened by conformity stays down for good. ~ Thomas J. Watson, Jr.

Sailorman is right. the propointer is worth every cent. I have had a few of the others and in my opinion they all were a waste of money. Just my opinion.

Luck in the hunt to all! . Blade310

Pro pointer, A must have. (for me anyway).

I've used them all, the Propointer is the best. You can get cheaper, but you might just as well go open the front door and throw your money out into the yard, same results.

I got to agree. I had a 40 dollar pin pointer and hunted with a few people with the pro pointer and they had such a faster retrieval rate than me. So two weeks later ordered mine and will never hunt without it.

If you want something cheap while you save for a propointer, Harbor freight has a handheld i believe is under $20.00. It works as well as anything besides the propointer. Tom

Go the extra mile and buy the Garrett Pro-Pointer. I have had many others too, just like some had mentioned. Rotary knobs and extra switches wear out and allow dirt to get inside the electronics. Knobs don't belong on decent electronic equipment any more. The Garrett Pro-Pointer has one push button. It has auto tune...unlike the other pin-pointers which have to be tuned and re-tuned as batteries wear out and/or the temperature changes. Plus, it's made in USA, not China like the rest of them.

I wont use anything but the Pro Pointer. Save up your money! I have three detectors in use with two pro pointers and a third one coming shortly.
