So tell me just what the heck happened today cuz I'm confused.

Which by the way really isnt a new condition for me. So I'm at an old farm house with my ACE 350 doin my thing and I get a real good hit, saying possibly silver, maybe a 50 cent piece and its at about 6-8". I pinpoint it and start diggin. I get down to about 6" in a grapefruit sized hole and I'm finding nothing. I go to 8" and widen the hole, still nothing. I go to 12" and open the hole to basketball size and STILL NOTHING! I rescan the hole several times, trying different sensitivity settings and each time BANG, BANG, BANG, still an awesome signal but no prize. Its still saying 6-8", mostly 8" right in the middle of the hole. I went to 14" and a bit bigger than a basketball, 40 min worth of digging, with no prize. After the first 4" it was just rock and sand, TOUGH diggin, so I filled it in and scanned it again just to see, yep, still a great signal. So I go on to other spots and then stop there again on my way out to scan it again. Guess what, no signal at all, none! I recheck my settings, even scan a quarter just to see if its working. That great signal I had for 40 min was now completely gone. Can anyone explain this? Later, after I gave up on the big hole, I had a good dime signal at 4", so I dig it, laid the plug on my mat and scan it, nope, still in the hole. Get another scoop, check it and the hole and nothing, the target did a Houdini on me. I even checked the dirt on the shovel. I filled the hole and scanned an area about 3' across and got no signal. Laid a dime where I dug and scanned it, perfect dime hit. Whats the deal, am I chasing ghosts or what? Thanks for any ideas.
Ken.

I've had that happen to me using a GTI 1500. I believe Its trace iron that was disturbed when you start digging.

Most likely a much bigger deeper target, like a paint can at 2 feet...

What happened, was either one of these.....

#1) There is a large piece of iron buried at a great depth, deep enough to get a reading, but still below the 12" you dug.

#2) There was once a large metal object, such as a tin can, which has long ago rusted to the point where it isn't really a mass of iron any more. The detector is still picking up the rust, which could be over quite a large deep and wide area.

Sometimes, raising the coil 4", then 6" then 10" and higher swinging it over the target and noting the strength and height of the coil will give you a clue. A coin sized object buried in the ground should start to fade at around 6-8". A large piece of junk or (jar of coins) will continue reading loud at greater heights.

it's so obvious. if you'd looked up you'da seen an UFO hovering above your head causing all the EMI problem. the space guys probably just stopped over to see what you were digging. get an aluminum hat for your detector. :usmc:

I've has similar things happen. Usually it's from a piece of metal that has completely rusted away. If the soil is sandy I can often see the rust color in it.

I get those signals with the A T Pro Ken, you need to lift and swing the coil 8 to 10 inches

above the target, if it is still loud and clear then it is probably large deep iron or deep pop

can, iron infested soil will give you the ghost signals and the signal will disappear once

you disturb / dig the soil, all part of learning the ACE 350

Keep swinging my friend.

H H and take care.

It's odd that it was there the last time you recovered it,,,and then was gone when you came back. That makes no sense at all. Makes me think it is electrical,,,maybe a dog fence ,or whatever,,and it was shut off when you came back. That's a long shot,,but can't think of anything better.
Also some places that have allot of electrical interference can made a detector do some strange things.

I have had some similar things happen,,but I always found something it the hole that made the signal disappear. Like a ball of rust.

Or,,,,,,Just ,,,,,, Maybe ,,,,,,,there was a mole in the ground carrying around a WLH!!! LOL

I wouldn't worry about it too much unless it happens again.

I had a cell phone and a cb radio do that to my Ace a couple of times.

I think John's right- it was either:
  • A really deep hunk of big iron or soda can (I get this all the time- raise the coil around a foot, if you still get a signal, move on).
  • Iron residue from a disintegrated item
  • Hot spot in the soil - I get that here in New Mexico, not sure where you're located...
  • GoGoGopher was burrowing below ground and stashing his latest bling in his secret underground vault!
