question for you guys who have been doing this for years

I've been using my 250 with the sniper coil for a while now but yesterday I decided to go back to the stock coil for the day. It started going off constantly and in a normal scan, sounded like the pinpoint feature. Even with the sensitivity turned down to one notch, it continued. So, what's gone wrong?

Make sure your coil plug is seated in good and then try a Factory Reset. If that doesn't cure it, it's probably a coil gone bad.

Reboot the batteries.

I"ve been metal detecting for thirty years, and the 250 [ I have two] are the only ones I use. The only problem with the 250 is that it will false alot, if you are near electric lines.

I have this problem on occasion also...Usually, cleaning the contacts both on the coil and on the Pro with a good electronics contact spray cleaner, and letting it dry before reseating, then a hard reset of the machine (hold power button down until you hear the double beep) will cure this. If not, it might be time to call Garrett for a new coil, or coil replacement.

Thanks for all your thoughts. I tried it again the next day and it worked fine...not sure what the problem was, but probably didn't have the plug seated properly. I was sure that I had a bad coil so it was a relief to find that it works fine. I still like the sniper coil for most hunts though. Thanks again.

High EMI or EMF fields will cause the AT Pro to do this also...usually turning the machine off, and getting out of that area helps...Other times you MUST reset the detector.

Did you allow the stock coil to get to hot, maybe left it in the sun for to long? I have this problem with my 12.5" GTI coil. In the shade it works fine but use it in the sun to long and it goes nutz.
