Found first real gold and feel kinda bad about it

Howdy all,

Was on a beach vacation last week. Took my 250 for a little stroll. Got a real good ping, dug it, and found an 18k gold medallion. I feel bad for someone because the medallion has a relief image of Christ on one side and initials and a date (more than 30 years ago) engraved on the other. I have NO idea how to go about finding the owner and I'm guessing that the he or she is upset about the loss.

Bummer

I hope you realize I was joking. You could always put a lost and found advertisment in the newspaper for that area.

Hi Mike,

No worries friend. I kind of figured that you were joking. I don't think that the newspaper idea would work. I found the medallion on the beach in an area of I would guess hundreds, if not thousands of vacation rentals. They typically are week to week rentals so I'm guessing the owner is long gone. I did look on the craigslist lost and found site for the area but with no luck.

Thanks,

LW

That's a fifty-fifty guess. I wouldn't even mention there are initials or date on it or the karat. I wouldn't even mention that it is religious. If by chance the person who lost it posted a lost article and mentioned the initials and date, etc. anyone who saw that could claim it.

I would not sweat it too much...30 years is a LONG time, and it has probably been replaced...I imagine it did hold sentimental value to the owner, but if your going out somewhere that you could easily lose your jewelry...DON'T WEAR IT!!!
Send up a prayer to the Karma Gods, and the owner will find something just as valuable...

You could check with the companies who run the rentals and just ask if anyone has reported a lost piece of jewelry with no description. If they come up with the right description then it's probably legit.

Congratulations on finding 18K gold, WTG. I have never done this myself and can't wait till the day I join the gold club. I understand how you feel about the person who lost it.

When I watched the treasure vision video of Mr. Garrett and the ghost towns of Utah, I felt the same way. Happy because his research and hard work paid off, but sad because the people who lost or left their money behind represented probably everything they had in the world to live on or fall back on and they either lost it or died. It's sad when the sum total of someone's life is a prince albert can full of buffalo/indian head nickels or some 20 dollar gold coins, but glad that someone found it after all this time.

When he found the 12 bars of gold bullion from the stage coach robbery, that was different than an individual's life savings. It was all they had to keep a place to lay their head at night and put food on the table. If you could find the rightful owner, that would be great. If not, enjoy your find and HH.

Either way, you've been blessed to find an 18K gold medallion and blessed with a good conscience and concern for the person who lost it. That's what our hobby is all about. Hope you enter it in the find of the month contest and win a free propointer.
