Coin Collecting Mostly:smile:

Since I have been coin collecting since I was 12, metal detecting has been my number one means of adding various silver coins and others to my collection. My last count a few years was about 1,450 found silver coins and about 18 gold coins bought with clad. When I started buying a yearly gold coin with my clad, gold was not near as mach per ounce as it is today. It ended up being a truly good investment.

Always taking the next swing of the coil ... right on the edge of discovery.

Connecting with history and with someone's life story.

Returning that ring found on the beach, after it was lost for eight years, and seeing the tears (of happiness) in the young lady's eyes when she puts it back on her finger. It was inscribed inside, "Love from Mom and Dad". It took a lot of searching, until I found her name in her dad's obituary.

I would gladly return the 1912 nickel found where an old trolley car stop used to be -- if I were there 100 years ago when the chap lost it. If that was his money for the trolley fare, maybe he had to walk home.

Finding the Minie ball on the battlefield (private land with owner's permission), near where my great-grandpa was wounded. The bullet has a dent in its tip. It hit something. It didn't hit my great-grandpa, but it speaks to what kind of day it was for those guys.

That's just saying it in plain words, but the feelings can run a lot stronger.

Funny you mentioned smoking. I made a deal with my wife. I said If I quit smoking, I will be allowed to buy a decent metal detector. That was over 20 years ago......my first detector was a Garrett GTA Ultra 500 detector. Best decision I ever made in my life.:smoke:

My husband and I bought our first metal detector for our 44th wedding anniversary. That was just last month May 1st (mayday! mayday!) ahem
anyways we've spend a lot more time outdoors together doing something fun. We've found coins, bolts, all kinds of metal things, maybe
even a bullet case but no real jewelry so far. We have an ace 350. What does a 99 on the machine mean? And what number do you consistently
find jewelry in the jewelry mode? Thanks in advance!

Fitness.

I'm in it for the fitness it has provided me since first taking up the hobby at 21 yrs old.

I love being OUTSIDE in "the great outdoors", be it the middle of a field, walking in a stream or deep in the woods! It's all good for the soul.

I couldn't care a jot about reward! Heck, most of my calls for lost items are done at my own expense. I'm hoping I'll be as fit in 10 yrs time!

John what I get out of detecting is something money can't buy. Peace and tranquility. Nothing relaxes me more than when I'm out digging holes and listening for tones. It gives me the opportunity to not think about the other things in life.
