Some things to try that will help us all learn. I know you must have a million of them. Heck I just learned about opaque covers for the flash.

Digital is like shooting transparency (slide) film. It does not have much latitude. This means that if you are 6ft or closer to your object and shoot with on camera flash (using totally auto mode) it will more than likely overexpose the subject. Tip: back up a little and use the zoom to get closer to the subject and then shoot.
