used their scanner for directly scanning their finds? Curious as to techniques and such. I've done a little experimentation, toned coins come out really nice but shiny ones (esp BU!) are completely washed out from reflections.

I have used a scanner more often than not to do the coins. Mike Moutray got me to leave the scanner lid up to give the coins that black background. Most of the coins have always turned out pretty good as far as I was concerned. I only have trouble scanning the bigger, less flat finds.
I use Photoshop or Corel photopaint to edit the images.
