Found this US thing in a corn field in NJ. Made of pewter I think. Didn't find the other half. Rev. war troops were in this general area. Any one have a clue what it was? Also an indian head and wheatie penny.

Is it possible that it has a brass face over a lead back? Are there rusty points sticking out of the back?

After studying it further, I believe you found a Civil War cartridge box plate. They deteriorated faster than belt buckles and sword plates.

No rusty points seen. Is very heavy. Maybe box plate like you said. Thanks for the info. Doesn't look worth keeping. Dave

A pic of the back would be very helpful. TomB
