Land Ownership

Hello All:

Found a piece of land that is used from time to time to hold a small community type fair. I want to get permission to MD this site but don't know where/how to look for the owner; its just a piece of vacant land. I thought about going down to the county courthouse, but I don't know how to describe the land. Any ideas?

the county assessor's office is the place to go. see if they got a map and maybe you can find it on that. they should know what to do after that.

If it's just a "piece of vacant land", then what's to stop you from simply walking out there and detecting it? I mean, it sounds as if you're saying there's no fences, no signs, etc.... , right? If I see such vacant lots (with short-cut paths through them, and so forth) and I have reason to suspect it might have something to detect there for, I certainly would not hesitate to hunt it.

Thanks guys for replaying to my post:

There are no fences or signs posted to keep out. It is right along side a busy highway. It has been the home of a Little fair that comes through once in awhile with rides and games etc. It looks very tempting cause I know there are coins there; just gotta be. But, don't want to end up in jail MDing on someone else's land. Since I'm new to MDing I guess I'm kind of shy about this sort of stuff.

I don't think anyone "goes to jail" for detecting un-fenced un-posted land. Only if you're hopping fences, ignoring signs, and can't take a warning. And ... heck ... if it hosts public events like this, then ........... sounds like the public is not disallowed from being there. If an owner wanted so bad for no one to be there, he's certainly welcome to put a fence around it. I bet you no one cares less. Afterall, you're looking for the boyscout ring you lost there when you were a kid, right?

I think that you are following the best policy by attempting to locate the land owner. Some people are very hard nosed and for good reason when it comes to their property. It is theirs, not every detectorist who drifts by and wants to hunt it. If he says no, it is no. If you are out there without asking him and he comes by, it could get very serious. Do the safe thing and try to locate him.

the long and short of it is, you have no business hunting private property with-out permission. it could come obout it's public but until you know you shouldn't hunt it and everyone knows this even if they chose to ignore it. maybe the circus people pay the owner a fee for it's use. still ,it's not your property. stay off til you have permission. it's part of the code of ethics for mders.

O.K. guys this is the latest!

I decided to get off of my (Blank) and go to the county assessor's office. Better yet, I decided to let my fingers do the walking; if you know what I mean. I called the assessor's office and within five minutes I had the name of the owner of said land. Now I have to send him a letter requesting permission to hunt the property. I'm a little nervous about doing this for I wonder why no one else has done this before me. I drive past this property fairly often and have never seen anyone MDing on it. I guess nothing ventured, nothing gained. Will send the letter and see what happens. I'll try to keep you posted.

i have only found two people hunting in my park in the last two years. i have talked to 27 who say they've hunted it often for years. ya never know how hunted an area is. i found a parcel of property last year. looked up the owner's name and called him on the phone. he was hesitant but gave me the go ahead anyway. didn't find much. my hunting buddy came away with a mercury dime. ya won't get the yes unless you ask.

You must always get permission.

It's the right thing to do.

Most likely, it is county, state, or city property...City and County Properties are usually fair game, but you still are best to seek proper permission...

Okay Listen up guys:

Sent out a letter for permission to hunt said land and the owner responded the next day with his approval! It has been raining fairly hard the last few days, but as soon as it lightens up I'll make my move. Will let you know if I find anything.
