Have any of you XLT swingers every try to get the gold with one of these detectors?

I'm going to say that detectors like the XLT are not designed to be sensitive enough for tiny nuggets, that's the reason for the Gold and prospecting models.
And that's not an XLT problem, it would be the same for any general purpose model or brand.

you can set the xlt up for nugget hunting but as stated it won't do as good as a for nugget hunting machine. if the xlt is all you have then that's what you try to use. finding one good nugget will buy a very good gold huntin machine.

Unless your hunting area is profuse with ounce-plus nuggets, the XLT would not be a good choice. Its 6.59KHZ frequency is too low to achieve much success with small gold (low response) targets. Not impossible, of course...I have found pierced-ear earrings when the only metal was the "needle" that goes through the ear with my XLT. But for better success with small gold targets you should be looking at a detector of at least 15KHZ. Gold machines have their uses...like the Fisher Gold Bug which I believe runs at 50KHZ...

i have to think very small gold would still be an alloy for earring parts. that leads me to think the xlt would pick up on the other metals in the alloy. i agree with the points Gilfordberry makes.still if that's all you have then ya need to find more gold earrings so as to by the gb. you all have a great year of hunting .

Yes, I have tried the XLT in "nugget" country a few times.

CAN it work to find gold nuggets? Yes.

Is the XLT what I would prefer to use for hunting gold nuggets? Nope, not at all.

As mentioned, if the XLT is all you have, and if you have a smaller-size coil like the 5.3 BullsEye or maybe an 8" like the Royal 800, it will work a bit better than the 950. On larger size nuggets it can do 'OK.' Typically, most nuggets are smaller size and other detectors are easier to use, with greater success, than the XLT.

If you want to make gold nugget hunting a serious goal, and be more successful, then other than research and site access, you'd be best served to use a model better designed for the task. Something like the MXT or a specialty model like the GMZ or GMT.

Yes it can be! I know owners of the 6000 series machines doing just fine. 6.59 khz will find 6 grain nuggets in mineralized soil. Granted you can find gold smaller than you can see with a GMT the XLT can do just fine. You can customize the machine to the ground you are hunting. 6.59 khz will do better in wet ground. Use a small DD coil to help in hot ground. Turn the gain as high as it will go without becoming unstable. Learn the machine and get used to it before you start throwing money around at something different. I have the XLT, DFX GMT (to chase black sand) & modified gpextreme pulse machine.
When I get time I'll dig up some settings I've used with shocking results.

Remember there is a lot of hype out there. In the old days people got rich selling shovels. I have a background in electronics and have nothing to sell you.
