Taking my xlt to the beach

Hi all,
I've never done any metal detecting before, but my late grandfather left me a whites spectrum xlt detector w/ 2 battery packs, charger, and owners manual(along with some other detecting accoutrements). So it seems like a pretty cool hobby and I'm gonna take it up. I'm taking the wife and kids to the beach in july and I can't wait to searh for beach treasure while the family plays in the sand. I know not to get the electronics wet, but is it okay to get the search coil wet if I'm hunting at the water line? I've got a little while to familiarize myself with the machine's basic adjustments and presets before I go, but it seems like it can be tweaked to the 'enth for someone versed in it's features. I plan to use it's beach preset when I go, but I'm gonna start searching around my area in the meantime (having my first hunt tomorrow). any advice for a newbie? or my upcoming beach hunt?
Thanks,
Brett

you will do just fine in the factory coin jewelry setting, go for the pull tabs or rings will be missed, they say once you figure it out you can skip the pulltabs, but I still do it to this day,I advise getting a had held scoop makes finding things in the sand alot easier. good luck on your beach adventure

Thanks,
I'm in the process of making a couple of scoops right now. I had some old plastic horse feed scoops that I drilled holes through (out of the horse buisness now, hooray!) and they are identical to most of the handheld plastic scoops you see at websites like kellyco. Also have a big metal scoop that I've drilled out, and I'm going to weld a handle made from conduit on to it tomorrow so I'll have a stand up scoop too.
Me and a buddy/detecting mentor are going down to a spot beside the river where people have congregated and picniced in our town since the mid-1800's or so for my first official hunt today. I can't wait to see whats there!

Nothing worth taking pics of on my river hunt. found some old broken boat parts, and some clad coins. There was so much interference from random metal junk there's no telling what could have been masked by it. On the bright side, I did however start learning to use my machine, and we have secured permission to hunt an old city park, and the playground of an ele. school that was old when my parents went there in the late '40s. I live in a small town and have never seen or heard of anyone detecting around here, so maybe it's a schoolyard that hasn't been touched. here's hoping anyway, will post anything worth seeing that I may find later this week
thanks,
Brett
