WHITE'S SPECTRA V3 AND SUN RAY INVADER DX-1 TARGET PROBE COMPATIBILITY

The Sun Ray Invader DX-1 has been determined by us and the engineers at White's Electronics in Sweet Home, OR to be compatible with the new Spectra V3 with the following exceptions:

(1) The probes we have tested on the V3 did not overload on RX 15 (gain) with TX Boost on.

(2) However, the stock White's 10" DD coil may or may not overload with the DX-1 in-line depending on the tolerances from coil to coil. This has nothing to do with the probe or coil involved, rather with the switch (for switching from coil to probe and visa versa)

(3) It was found that by either reducing the RX gain a number or two ,or, disengaging TX Boost resolved the problem.

(4) In most hunting conditions RX gain cannot be used at maximum setting unless you are detecting on neutral ground such as a beach with no mineralization, especially with TX boost engaged.

(5) Other V-3 compatible coils, including non V-tuned coils (whether factory or after-market) may overload at max RX and TX Boost and may require a lower RX setting (or TX Boost disengaged). How low will depend on the coil and ground conditions, however, our tests showed other coils we tested only had to be lowered on RX a few numbers to cancel the overload if TX Boost was left engaged. (NOTE: Various tests described above were conducted by both Sun Ray Detector Electronics and White's Electronics in Sweet Home, OR. White's Electronics has approved the above compatibility statement.)

Thanks Ralph for the official statement and the conditions and criteria qualifications ......... unfortunately I am able to hunt nearly everywhere WITH TX Boost ON and the disc sensitivity cranked up (we have great soil here in DE). Running a high RX Gain (which I can also do here) is not a big deal with me as it doesn't effect depth to any real degree so I would have no problem turning it down, but TX Boost ON does and I won't run without it. I cannot see myself turning TX Boost off each time I want to pinpoint with the Sun Ray DX-1 then turning it back on when I am done or for that matter de-tuning my V3 to allow the use of this probe. I bought the V3 for what it could do and de-tuning is like putting a governor on a race engine IMO. I don't run my old Whites coils for the same reason, except the one 5.3 Eclipse that allows the machine to run flat out without overloading.

If I lived in an area high with mineralization and was not able to run the V3 HOT or TX ON ( and never planned on hunting where I could use the V3 to its full potential) I guess I would of bought another DX-1 already but I was hoping for a probe that worked no matter what the setting are. Guess that isn't going to happen ...... unfortunately.

Thanks again Ralph for the information.

Jim,

One option for you is to create a secondary program for the DX-1. Ferinstance, suppose you have a program called "JimsProg" for which you have V tweaked up the way you want it for normal hunting. Then create an exact copy called "JimsProgDX1" but turn off TX Boost and turn down RX gain if needed. When you need to use the probe simply flip to the alternate program and go. Flip back when done. It's quick & easy. You could also set the alt program with other differences, like all-metal mode and pinpoint screen to emulate the trigger-pulled mode.

Jim,

If I am reading your post correctly, you must not have read my statement correctly. I only referred to RX Gain setting in conjunction with TX Boost - not Disc or All Metal sensitivity. In our test (Sun Ray) we were able to run the All Metal Sensitivity and Disc Sensitivity at max 100 with TX Boost on without overload. It was very unstable (unusable) but did not overload in our tests with the DX-1 in-line. This was true with the switch box switched to either (10" stock DD) coil or probe. It was the RX Gain setting that caused the overload at 15 and had to be turned down a few numbers to 10 or 11 (in our tests) to stop the overload.

If the problem is the switch....

How about making the inline probe with "true bypass" like in some high end guitar effects pedals? I would think that would solve the problem, if its the switch... that would take the switch out of the loop right?

I know just enough about electronics to be dangerous so it could be a hairbrained idea... then again it might be an easy fix.

Ralph,
WIll the DX-1 need to be recertified with the V3i or does the certification stay the same for all current and future V3 variants?
Thanks,

Since the DX-1 is basically a small coil and since the present V3 compatible coils work on the V3i we have no plans for any upgrading. White's has not indicated to us that coils need to be changed for the V3i vs the V3.
