Red cap

Not really liking the red cap on my dx-1. My two other Sunray probes didn't have these caps. I never have any wear problem with those. So is it really needed for protection? Or is it put on there like the red or orange cap on a toy gun to show it's not a firearm? I think this may be the case otherwise it would be black..... I know I could paint it but can I just cut the thing off?

I'm not sure of it's purpose, but it should slide off if you don't want it on there.

My other ones were solidly filled with epoxy. Not sure if they are made different now and really need a cap for protection?

I really don't think you NEED it Kenny, I'm sure the probes are made the same as in past years, just a bit shorter is all. I'm am curious as well of the purpose but my guess is a combination of safety and it does provide some protection as well.

It appears this one is made somewhere else for Sunray. So I guess it's possible it's made a little different?

The red cap is added for protection against wear on the tip of the probe. We have gotten probes in for repair that were worn down from abrasion due to gravel, etc. Also, sometimes the black end was damaged or missing. The cap is red so when the black of the tip begins to show through you know it is time to change the red cap. Removal is as easy as sliding it back off - it may have some suction so you may have to twist it a little when pulling it off.

Thanks Ralph. It pulled right off. I thought it was glued on. I can see the inner black cap. I'll leave it on because I can see the practical purpose of the cap now. It's just my other probes didn't have the cap.

I actually replaced mine with a red cap off a piece of threaded lead pipe...It is a little thicker than the stock cap, but also more durable...does not seem to effect depth in the slightest, and protects probe tip.
The new cap is more like plastidip...soft, but tough...
