Minelab Xterra 705 - best coil for. . .
Posted by: mike5853

Hi guys - so I'm looking at getting an Xterra 705 this Spring but looking for the best coil option. I'm a coin and jewelry hunter primarily, maybe a trip or two to the beach. Is the standard 9" concentric 7.5kHz waterproof coil my best choice? I see you can also get the Xterra 705 Gold Pack which comes with the 18.75kHz Double-D elliptical coil as standard for the same price. Not going to be looking for gold here in NJ but I see a lot of you running the elliptical as your standard coil. Also, how would you rate the Xterra over all? I have a Whites MXT which is a very good detector and I will be comparing the two I'm sure.
Thanks for the feedback,

Thanks and good hunting,
Mike / '53Silver

Mike the Xterra 705 is the best machine I've ever used. Lighter and more powerful than the MXT. The 5x10 is a good coil, but is not waterproof, so if you are at the beach, stay out of the water. For the beach and land for maximum depth, the 10.5DD coils would be your best bet...Mark

Hey Mike,

The Xterra 705 LOVES coins....especially silver! The standard 9" 7.5 khz is an awesome coil that will get great depth....and waterproof as you mentioned. The eliptical coil will not get the depth of the 9" concentric...at least mine does not. Like Morelic mentioned...the 10.5 DD coil is a perfect coil...especially in trashy areas. I have 6 other machines....and this one is by far the best unit for coin shooting. Pinpointing is easy. The unit is very light but powerful. Have never used Whites so I cannot compare them.

Ok Mark where do you reccomend me buying the DD coil you like so much. The the original poster I owned and MXT, sold it and will have my new 705 Friday. I havent even used the machine yet and know I made the right choice. LIGHTER plus more power, hands down winner from what I have researched on this forum and online

Mike, they make 2 10.5DD coils. Most folks favor the 7.5 kHz..Medium Frequency coil...............Mark

After using three different coils on the x-terras, I would buy the gold pack and then the 10.5 inch 7.5 DD unless the 3 khz becomes available in 10.5 DD.

IMHO and experience the 7.5 kHz stock coil is the most versatile, but if you are strictly hunting for coins the 3 kHz coil can't be beat.

Both of these are waterproof which is important to me and where I hunt.

I also have the 6" HF and the 10 DD MF, fine coils but I use them in special situations only.

Good Hunting,
Denny

The eliptical is not waterproof.
And neither are the 10.5" coils. The 6" and 9" are the only ones that are.
That said, the 10.5" can be made morewater resistant by sealing the coil cover to the coil with a bead of silicone, and sealing around the coil wire & gromet. I believe that the eliptical can be improved by silicone sealing the coil wire & gromet too.

If I have to choose one coil it would be the
Coiltek WOT 15"dd.
Its waterproof, it have good balance and
pickup the smallest things...

Is there a reason..other than cost...

Mike the stock coil On the 705 is very hard to beat! You will get better seperation with the DD coil though.

Holler if you have any questions or looking for a great deal. Lovett to help you! Thanks, bart.

Yes,

Several of the coil housings were re-purposed from previous existing housings. A common method for waterproofing a coil is to pot it, that is, fill it completely with a compound like expoxy. You can imagine what the 5x10 coil would weigh if filled with epoxy, same with 10.5 DD.

BarnacleBill
