I'll answer this one REAL QUICK!! Yes the 705 or any of the Xterras are deeper. Than the AT Pro. I have a .69 cal minie ball planted in my test bed at 10" and the AT Pro would not find it with the 8x11 coil. No problem with the Xterra 70 or the 705 with the 10.5DD coils. The 705 is alot smoother and has better audio. My ground is bone dry right now and the Xterra STILL nails the deep bullet:thumbup:

I've owned 3 Xterra 70's and AT Pro and AT Gold. The AT Pro and AT Gold are every bit as deep as the Xterra series on silver and they are deeper on brass, gold, and lead here in NC. The Xterra series have very weak audio also, whereas the audio on the Garretts gives so much more info and much fuller sound. The key on the Garrett machines is to properly ground balance for your area and adjust according to what you are searching for. The AT Pro is also waterproof so it is a much better value for your $$$$$$. Each type of ground is different but the superb ground balance on the Garretts will allow you to be successful almost anywhere you hunt. The Xterra series also have a target lag which you'll notice in the field. The AT Pro and Gold are a couple of the best values on the market $ for $. They won't outhunt an Etrac or CTX, but once you learn how to use them you'll dig around 90 to 95% of the targets these high dollar machines can find. I currently own an Etrac, AT Gold and a Teknetics Omega which is also an excellent machine and one I favour over the Xterra's but it isn't waterproof so the Garrett AT series get the nod over it too.

Not to outright disagree with you michealnc, but I've not experienced any of the "weaknesses" that you've described. And, w/o more speciffic information like the frequency and coil configuration that you're comparing, I ain't buying the AT out performing the XT.

The Xterra properly set up will out do an AT anywhere that the control box is out of the water. Frequency choice, coil selection, and a host of other features make the XT more flexable/adaptable than any other machine in or under it's pricepoint.

If you want to dunk your machine or hunt in a downpour, get an AT. Otherwise get something else. You get what you pay for. So if part of what you're paying for with an AT is it's being waterproof, then how much technological advantage do you really think it can have?

And don't get me wrong! For what the AT was designed for, it's certainly fine. But since I can have more than one machine, if I want to go into the water, I'll look at one of the Fisher's or a Tiger Shark to compliment my land detectors.

I'm just saying that I've had a AT Pro and that was my observation between the two. The AT just does not work for me in my ground...MO

I go detecting with a friend that has the at pro. Based on our limited comparisons, his at pro goes deeper, but I find more coins;-) I use the 18.75 kh coil and he uses the standard at pro coil.

They are pretty comparable on depth. The AT Pro stock coil is a tad bigger. I like the overall package better with the Xterra. I think the Big Green built the AT Pro to run against the Xterra series. I prefer the options ML has.

In prospect mode I believe the Xterra will have a big advantage.

I have both and truely enjoy both but my at pro is deeper and the pro mode sound is telling. Bottle caps fool my 705 but with iron autio on my pro i get a low hi low tone on caps. I prefer pro also because i can hunt in any conditions and ground balance and recovery speed is incredible. Like my 705 for the boys when thy hunt with me. They say it looks cooler than my at pro. Go figure? Kids!

Well gotta admit, I use my Xterra 70 99% of the time, but I have the Fisher GBSE 29 version that I use for really bad iron laden spots. I like it way better than the AT Pro that I had, lighter and the audio is alot better.....MO

Or look at the Fisher Gold Bug PRO or Technetics G2(same machines in different shaft configurations I think) both with the 11" elliptical coil.

Or Technetics T2(latest version) for depth.

I find the XT-705 and my XT- 70 deeper, better stability, truer visual ID, than the AT-Pro in my Georgia soil.

I own all three.

You can wad up to 3 feet with the XT and I consider the AT-Pro control box water resistant not water proof.

Good Hunting,
Denny
