Go to the MineLab website, join, and download Randy Horton's free e-book "Understanding Your X-Terra".
It will be of more help than any other single thing that you can do.

Make sure you read up on the Coins Plus mode. Every now and then I get a reading that's jumping around. I put the 705 in Coins Plus mode and it seems to smooth out the reading. It's always cool when it smooths out the reading enough to tell what coin it is and actually dig up the coin where if I left the detector in the regular mode, I probably wouldn't have dug the coin being that the reading was unstable.

You can also find a video on You Tube with Des Dunne showing how to use Coins Plus.

After you posted about the coins plus mode as I didn't even think of it! I found the Des Dunne video and watched it , And this morning I tried it!
It did calm down the eratic readings.Do you run it in the coins plus mode all the time or is only used in highly minerealized ground?
My ground balance numbers always seem to fall in the 2-26 range from spot to spot.
My next thing is to get the 10.5 DD 7.5 coil as I know it more sensitive to smaller targets than the stock 9 concentric and the DD is better in moderately
mineralize soil.

If Xterra users read their manual thoroughly and download Randy's free ebook and read that thoroughly, you'll find just abourt everything you need on the Xterra. Then with that knowledge, other Xterra users can offer do's and don'ts and why's and how's and then you have to go practice with it to see if it will work for you. What works one place might not work in your location.

I went hunting at a VFW post this morning ware I have permission to hunt There is a tremendous amount of trash in the ground everything associated with a bar!
I ran my detector with this setup.
sens. = 20
auto noise cancell = 2
threshhold= -1
Auto ground bal.=27
tones = 4
When I first started this morning the 705 with the stock 9" concentric coil was so radical I could'nt use it then I got to thinking about the things I read
and learned and tried this setting and really calmed it down,Only managed to pull 77 cents but it was a good learning trip for me.

For trashy areas the 6" coils will help. Either will work but I prefer the DD coil.

I watched the video and have a couple questions on the coin + feature. First he said never use in normal soil, but did not elaberate on what he considered normal soil. Can someone help on this.
And secondly if it is only used in mineralized soil. Do you run it continually or only on jumpy targets?
Thanks For the Help

Barnacle Bill made an excellent post on how to determine the mineralization levels of your soil, using the X-TERRA. (FAQFAQ section) Without going through that elaborate process, I've found that if I can obtain a proper ground phase in the mid 20's or higher when using the stock concentric coil, I consider the ground to NOT be highly mineralized. Numbers in the teens or single digit ground phase numbers while ground balancing while using a concentric coil would be considered highly mineralized and would benefit from using a DD coil.

TID Stability was designed to help stabilize TID numbers in areas of highly mineralized soil conditions. Mineralized soil has a tendancy to "confuse" the phase delay, which is used to identify target properties. If your soil is not highly mineralized, you don't need to turn on TID Stability. If you are hunting in areas with high levels of mineralization, and digging targets that register one TID but reflect totally different target properties, you should benefit from using TID Stability. But note that it will not make the detector "detect" any better. And the tone provided by the target may not match the notch segment represented by the TID number. But the numbers should be more closely matched to the target's actual properties. JMHO HH Randy

I only use Coins Plus mode as a temporary solution no matter what soil I am working in. When I get an erratic reading I switch to Coins Plus, see if that stabilizes the reading and then take the detector back out of Coins Plus mode.
