can someone explain how the different disc settings work the examples are disc 5 and 21 supposedly some type of boost settings or a broader range thanks Jim

Didn't realize the T2 was set up this way, I know the F70/F75 is with their different disc range so I thought the Tecknetic unit might be different but if it is not sure where the actual number range would be.

The way it was explained to me at 4 and under and 20 up these are designed to discriminate a little differently than within that 5-20 range with enhanced gain as the result.
Not exactly a boost per se, but because of the slightly different programming process the over under disc settings are a bit more sensitive because of extra gain, noisier too in pre DST models anyway, and since that sensitivity is heightened some I guess you could consider it kind of a boost.
The actual boost process for units that have them is different, it is all about slowing down the machine's sampling rate, it takes pictures if you will that will take in more information so it will go a little deeper if you move the coil slower than default speed so it can gather that info efficiently.
Kind of like pointing a camera at the night sky and leaving the lens open.
The longer that lens stays open the more time it can gather the faint light from distant stars so there will be more captured on the film, (or digital storage), than one normal exposure at any regular lens speed.

So boost is a different process totally but even though setting the disc above and below those numbers technically is too any perceived boost is more of a byproduct of heightened sensitivity/gain than actual boost.

Ok, did a little searching and found some info about this on Dankowski's site.
Your numbers are different...you will get enhanced gain from 0-9 and 50 on up, the range you posted is for the Fisher units only.

At 60 it appears something changes again and it gets quieter while still achieving the same good depth that you would get at the noisier levels.

------------------------

Discrimination Levels

0 - 9" depth reading (extremely noisy due to EMI & machines internal circuitry noise)
10 - 7" depth reading (approx 50% less noise than 0 disc setting)
21 - 6 1/2" depth reading (quiet)
30 - 6" depth reading (quiet)
40 - 6" depth reading (quiet)
49 - 5 1/2" depth reading (quiet)
50 - 9" depth reading (this is where another huge increase in Gain occurs, besides the zero setting. Same noise level as 0 disc setting)
60 - 9" depth reading (approx 50% less noise than 50 disc setting)
70 - 8 1/2" depth reading (quiet)
80 - 8" depth reading (quiet)

Observation - the Gain does not seem to follow a straight linear output as disc is increased. Notice that from 0-49 disc there is a 3 1/2" range in detection depth. From 50-80 disc there is a 1" range.

0r

If you remove the disc 0-9 results from above, there is a 1 1/2" depth range between disc 10-49 and a 1" depth range between disc 50-80.

The large gain increase at 50 and the 10-49 disc range has serious implications on how a user sets the discrimination.

BTW....don't worry about the depth numbers in that test since it was indoors.
The T2 is known to be a depth monster outdoors in decent soil under normal conditions.

----------------

"The following is a ROUGH measurement of how discrimination levels affect the Gain output on a T2. This was done as a indoors air test. Sweep speed was what I consider a normal speed used when in the field. Not ultra fast as to attempt to attain maximum depth in air testing. Coin response signal accepted for measurement is a two way signal. A fringe questionable one way audio response was not considered as acceptable for measurement purposes."
