OK-so go ahead and laugh...

I put my $40 Walmart copycat Tracker in the closet-even left the batteries in it. So I took the knobs off, went inside and clipped the useless "kick" meter and glob-soldered an old 4" coil from an old Tracker I once had-before I tore it up trying to do stuff to it. It doesn't even have a leg stand, the PVC "half-pipe" sleeve I made for it finally broke off as did the foam I glued on an old Tracker shaft. Just got to wondering if it would work in a fair ground where iron trash and funky foil pieces drive the other detectors batty. Well, I got a lot of "clicks" in the audio but no crazy sounds, thanks in part to the small coil. This thing ate my "better" detector's lunches! Most noticeably were the two $1 coins and quarter in the same proximity. Of course the other detectors just went wild, but this combo was more believable on the tone ID, although I could still lift the coil 6" at medium sensitivity. Well, I guess I'm about to first solder the connections sort of professional-like, then add a phone jack-it doesn't even have one! Then, I'll put the knobs back on, add a foam arm rest, and "make" a PVC stand. Thanks for looking. Didn't mean for my toes to get in the pic!

Hey I'm not laughing. People underestimate these types of detectors all the time. If they were doing so great with their detectors you would not have found all those coins. I say grats to you my friend.

Thanks. Part of it was my fault. When the Compadre went over it the first time, the signal was so huge I thought it was a large piece of trash. The place is loaded with large stuff. As Monte has said so many times-the best discriminator is the eye.

Another good saying is "be one with the machine" that holds true since the ugly machine matches the ugly toes  but they both seem to do the job

"Swing the coil east to west, then north to south, rinse, reverse, repeat"

White's Classic III SL
Eurotek Pro w/8" coil
2 X BH Tracker IV, one with 4" and other with 8" coil
Vibra probe, HF PP

hey i keep a cheapie machine to haul around in the trunk unless its real hot. i park in a garage at work, so its usually there. having a simple machine always with me lets me hit spots on the way home to test the area. then come back with the beasts.
