New to metal detecting

Hello, I'm new to metal detecting and looking for any help I can get from the pros. I received a Bounty Hunter Time Ranger for a gift and so far I've only practiced and trying to get familiar with the machine. I live in North Florida not far from Lake Seminole. A lot of history around this area and I want to find some of it. Any tips and suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks Mac

:usmc: One big thing is you should become aware of any Federal and or State, County, or City antiquities Laws. I don't know much about detecting Florida but out here in the West, there are miles and miles of Government (public) land and there are federal Law people who are often out and about looking for violators of these Acts. The consequences of violating these Acts can be pretty rough like confiscation of your equipment including your vehicle and or jail with fines.

If I kept my detector at home, I would hardly use it. I keep mine in the vehicle, along with my bucket of digging tools and brushes, and constantly want to jump out and 'sweep' empty fields I always drive by during my work day. Never know when you'll pass an old house foundation or big tree in the middle of nowhere. Remember, you won't find anything sitting at home.
