Well I just got an old White's UL-2 up and running and took it out in the yard for a test spin. I have to admit that the darn thing is pretty good. I have covered the ground with dozens of other detectors and thought that other than the test garden I had clean soil, here's where I eat some crow, one modern dime three pre 82 pennies two sinkers, a deep well 9/16 socket 16" deep! And a coin that I have in the electrolyte tank right now. The soil in our area is from the 1820's dredging of the Cuyahoga river for the Erie Canal. Prior to that the area was occupied since 1740 by trader's Native American's and all sorts of passer by's. I hope that it comes out in fair condition. I can only say now that it is smaller than a dime but with more weight. And looks to be silver. But the sediment from the river is like graphite. And smells like rotting plant debris. That's cool considering the house I live in is one hundred and fourteen years old. And the coin was over 11" deep. Beyond that the ground is fill from the early days of Cleveland. So I can only assume that at that depth it was brought in from the river as fill dirt. I will post a photo of the coin as soon as the electrolysis is complete. As for the UL-2, it's now in my arsenal for good! I can't believe how much I appreciate the old school technology, simple no frills and if you have developed "The Ear" for those whisper quiet targets, an impressive machine that unfortunately had Industrial in the name. I guess that's why the Sierra Madre was put on the market, to get a second chance for the technology that was developed for the UL. I will be going to southern Ohio to a few celler dig's I have been working on it should be a great place to put it through at the pace's and see what I might have missed with the other detectors. Unit then, "Just Dig It" Ohio dirt Fisher.
