Having problems at beach with LS, Please help.

We live in Los Angeles and went to the beach today to try out the used Infinium we just bought. It was giving us false signals as soon as we landed on the sand and got worse as we got closer to the water. My boyfriend said it was probably interference so we tried to adjust the frequency . The base tone calmed down but still got blips every few steps. When rechecking the area of the blip there was no signal. Is it interference? It did seem that power lines were running from the highway to the life guard towers which were maybe a quarter mile apart from each other. I should mention that we took it out to the river and it was acting fine. We had the threshold at about 4 and the discrimination at 1. Turning the discrimination higher did not do any good. Any advice is appreciated. Could it be a damaged unit?

Your machine sounds like it is responding to the salt y sand.

Take the detector to the water line and with the coil resting on the sand, select Lock and do the frequency adjust if necessary, Then GB over the wet sand, Make sure that the disc is at zero when ground balancing and set threshold to around 4 or 5 and select fast track, When you feel that the gb is as good as you can get it
select Lock with the coil still resting on the sand. If when you raise the coil the detector makes a long low tone then set the disc to about 3 or 4 and see how the detector is performing.
If it is making rapid tone changes as you scan then check that the coil plug is on correctly and that the battery comp cap is on properly. Also that all of the batteries are seated firmly in their holder and making good contact with each other.

Let me know how you go.

Cheers

Fishers Ghost has given you some good advice. I would ask a further question and that is when you turn the Infinium on how many beeps do you hear? If you only hear one beep then you may well have flat batteries or one which is down on power. The noises you describe sound very much like what happens when the batteries are flat.

Best of luck

Check out the posting dated 7-1-2009, for Garrett infinium users, ground bal. Super important for salt wet sand. I've used a lot info from my two postings dated 9-23-2011 (New LS problems) and 9-22-20011 ( Anyone used Black Widows phones) I work the beaches in the San Diego area. I think the learning cerve is shortened by reading all the postings. It will take time and as much practice as you can.

Hi UrbanJungleBaby
I also live in the Los Angeles area and have an Infinium. There is a lot of EMI (electronic noise) in the Los Angelse area
and that may be your problem. I haven't deteced all the Los Angeles beaches, but sometimes it is so bad near the
Redondo Beach pier that I can't detect there. It won't affect non PI detectors anywhere near as much and some other PI
units are not as affected. The Infinium is particularly sensitive and that is the issue. That also gives it lots of depth and
makes it a great gold detector. Think gold jewelry at the beach. Also it is a very good nugget detector. You just may not
be able to use it at the particular beach you were at, Too much civilization. But where you can use it, you canr count on
it being a top notch beach detector.
Good luck,
Rich

One thing to remember is that the Infinium has gone through several updates and changes since the detector was originally released for sale. If the machine is an older model it just might need to be updated from Garrett. The original shielding on the coil cable was beefed up to a heavier style and the software has had some improvements over the years to help with some sensitivity issues. You just might want to contact Garrett as many have had their detectors upgraded at little to no cost for that specific service. Also, you can find out the year of manufacture from the serial numbers and if its ever had any service upgrades from them too.

Please read and print out some of the past forum posts to really learn how to best balance and use the Infinium! The machine does take time to learn, but it's a real beast once you do get used to the new language associated with it.

I've found "MANY" pieces of great jewelry beach hunting since It was purchased and its paid for itself many times over!!!

Thanks and HAPPY HUNTING!!!

PS..........Hi to all my old forum buddies too!!!!!!! I've been really busy with life but it's nice to be lurking on the forums again!!!:bouncy:
