Can Slaw.

Hello Everyone.
New here to the forum. I have owned an explorer since 2003 and just recently purchased an Etrac along with Andy S's book which I am currently reading. I move around alot and have come across an area that I'm sure should have alot of old coins. The trouble is. This area has had several Hurricanes hit over the years. I just started looking and I am hitting a tremendous amount to "Can Slaw" Any suggestions from this experienced group of detectorist's? I'm still learning the machine, which I had expected to do when I purchased the Etrac, but I won't be here for long. Maybe a couple of months hunting Sunday's mostly. I would like to maximise the amount of time I do have to hunt.
Thanks in advanced for any suggestions.

If you raise your coil 8-12" from the ground and still get the signal....it's a whole can. If it's a can that's been chopped up by the mower they usually come in at around 12-09 and are jumpy, where as nickels are usually 12-13 (for me) and are a steady signal. Hope you find tons of coins.

Great advice. Sad part is if you want gold rings you have to dig all aluminum hits!

Thanks Bart and Barberdan for the input. I ordered and should receive tommorow the 6 x 8 SEF coil. Hopefully I can get some better seperation. I tthink I'm just going to have to clean the area of the "can slaw" before I can get to the good stuff. I've been at this location for about a month and haven't seen any one with a detector untill last week when I came home from work and there were 3 guys and some children working the area over. It looked like the children were following one guy around with a shovel. He would hit a signal and the kids would move in to dig and he would just move on. The kids would dig a hole and not find anything and then would just walk off and leave the holes. I hope they were discouraged enough that they won't be back.
I saw them the next day in a city park doing the same thing. I think I will talk to them the next time I see them about the benefits of filling all their holes before we are all banned from detecting.
Any way hopefully this weekend I'll be able to get back out and see if there's any silver out there for me. You all have a great day.

The signal you get from aluminum will depend on the size and shape. You'll get everything from foil up through half dollar signals.
