When Noise Cancelling Keep Coil On Ground Or In The Air?
Posted by: Critterhunter

Lately my friend keeps his coil in the air when noise cancelling instead of on the ground like he used to do because a friend told him that was the best way to noice cancel his Etrac. I told him I think you are supposed to keep it on the ground, because EMI noise can hit and be received by the coil in very different ways depending on it's orientation in physical space, as when he puts it in the air it's tipped up somewhat at an angle. I feel it might be cancelling out noise at that odd angle, but not noise that is being picked up stronger when the coil is on the ground in normal hunting fashion. Just wondering if anybody has a opinion on this.

Think I'm finally home after a lot of years searching for my particular needs. Custom 1.5 lb lighter :minelab:Sovereign GT (easy to do by just "building" lighter shaft) & SEF 12x10 as everyday coil. 8" Tornado (actually 7.25") as super heavy trash coil (Very deep & separates better than typical 8/9" true size coils). 13" Ultimate for large fields/beaches on certain days I want to grid faster than even the 12x10's nice improvement over stock for that. Stock 10" Tornado stays on water rig (stock shaft). :garrett: ProPointer. Owned 15x12 & SunRay S-5 (5.5") at one time. Loaned a prior 13" Ultimate & SunRay S-12 (12.5").

Some Oldest Silver- 1835 Bust Dime, 1842 "O" Seated Dime, 1855 Seated Quarter, 1858 3 Cent Piece, 1891 Seated Dime, & another Seated Quarter too damaged to read date. Highest Value- 3 Cent Piece, Seated Quarter, & now 1921 F-12 Standing Liberty. Oldest Coin? Got to give large cents a good look & see. 2013 so far- 1 Seated Quarter, 1 Barber Quarter, 1 Standing Liberty, 2 Washingtons, 1 Barber Dime, 9 Mercs, 3 Rosies. 1 War Nickel. 19 silvers in total, & 1 1872 key date Indian, 2 Bufallos, 1 man's 14K gold medium sized ring & 1 gold chain, with possibility of few 8"+ deep mystery coins being Indians after cleaning.

I have tried both ways and can't really tell a difference. I do pump the coil up and down sometimes. In trashy areas manual NC has helped at times. What ever works. HH :minelab:

Thanks for that thread link. So it appears more people tend to say the coil should be about a foot or so in the air, but held parallel to the ground like you would normaly be hunting. That makes sense because the coil is basically an antenna and if you tip it upward somewhat like my friend is doing you may not be receiving the same noise interference floating around in the air like you would with the coil held flat. Just like tweaking the atennas on a TV, if any of you are old enough to remember that.

I only noise cancel maybe once every ten hunts, and that is ONLY because I am getting some interference, if I am not getting interference I do NOT noise cancel, been doing it that way for two yrs

Ken, that video is for getting to your sensitivity in auto quicker. That video has nothing to be said about noise cancelling which has nothing to do with your sensitivity.

I do both, have not been able to tell a difference except that I "feel" like 12" air works better...trust my gut, cause its big.

The confusion exists because it has been written both ways, ground and air. The machine is looking for EMI, so I can't see it making a huge difference either way. I prefer to noise cancel on the ground, but only if I can find clean ground. Otherwise I cancel in the air.

I also look for EMI souce such as overhead power lines. I try to get as close to them as I will be detecting before I noise cancel.

That's a good idea to get close to power lines and stuff before noise cancelling. I make my Etrac friends noise cancel after I turn my GT on and get near them so that we can hunt close to each other without interference. Works like a charm.
