Thanks to the guy that posted the Nail test. This test puts a dime just inside two nails and using an Etrac he picks them up every pass. This is great because the conductive number is very consistent. I knew I was picking up good targets out of Nails but I had to be sure. So i did the Nail test with a Clad dime. I did not pick it up at all with two large Galvanized Nails so I switched and I got two smaller Roofing Nails. Because of the Heads I thought these would be harder to pick up. Picked up the Dime every time. I am set ferrous open to 23 and got the reading of 19 or 20 and 43 every pass. I was good to go when I noticed something else.

As I picked up my Coil and wiggled it back and forth nearly every time at some point I was able to get either a perfect reading of 12 43 or close 11 43. This was as I pulled away from the target. I am using a Coiltek 10X5 coil so I am not sure this will work with a larger coil but this will be an excellent way to check ID on a coin.

I am thinking this works due to the tendency of the Coils picking up targets in a V directly under the coil and at some point the Nails are stopped from blending their ferrous number.

just one more tool for the bag.

It's really funny you should state the finding of lifting the coil gives the better ID. I thought I had noticed a similar thing with my older Whites using a concentric coil(not exact same test) awhile ago. I think you're correct about drawing away from the nails giving the better reading. Excellent insight....

I think you identified my winter project. Every coil has a sweet spot where the accuracy of the TID peaks at a given sensitivity setting at a particular depth. The trick is to discover that sweet spot and reproduce it in the field. I plan on investing some time in my test garden. Should be a profitable experience learning something about my E-trac and my coils. Thanks for a great post.

daddyflea it is good to see your post. I haven't seen you on here in a while, and I always enjoy your posts especially in winter when I can't get out due to the frozen ground.
