Seems kinda silly asking but I know there are magnetic fields involved. They say its a glancing blow but may disrupt gps and communications.

Hmm, I'm sure it will cause some noise. Really I don't know.

I brought this up two years ago and some believe and others don't. But the truth is that this year is suppose to be the highest year for solar activity.
It has disrupted things in the past. I did a little test in a hunting spot of mine. At the time, it seemed that after a certain time of day, right when the sun was down, my detector would become more stable. I also hunted at night before and again, it was more stable.

What about now, does it affect my hunting during the day,...could be a little, but it just needs to be adjusted for. If it gets so bad that it renders the detector useless, I think we all would have bigger problems to worry about.

Rusty digger ... when you have a huge massive solar flare like this one coming (never in history has there been any recorded) You will have the earths magnetic feild super energize to a point that all electronic devices will be affected, Your best bet is to stay home under the protection of your home until this effect comes to and end .Some hard core detectorist have more experience in this situtuation, so they will be able to go out and detect. Be alert and stay home and read all you can about the situation.

Totally untrue marbien, get yourself informed. Solar flares are a natural occurrence happening in usually 7 year cycles. The one today and tomorrow are FAR from being monumental and is fairly minor in size. It is the largest in six years because the cycle is just now coming around to peak activity. BTW, your home does not protect you from the solar activity, the small amount of radiation will go right through your roof like it wasn't there.

To keep this V3i related............ get out there and hunt people, this solar activity MAY light up those deep silver coins that you have missed before..... Sounds good anyway.

I just got back...I had to go test this out for myself too..got 11 N, 3 D, 5 Q's, 24 Ps, two hotwheel cars and a cell phone in about an hour, swinging in a wet sand totlot, got up near to the poles too, so I would say NO effect at all. I was curious..

Been reading up on this. Lightning has an effect on VLF.So that dime at 10in might be lightning in the distance. Has anyone experienced this. Actually it's probably more like EMI I would think.

numbers jump all around, machine goes haywire, I had to do a factory reset and then just gave up...I like to detect in the rain, but the lightening interference prohibits it in an electrical storm. Lightening only strikes golfers and soccer players from what I read, so I think we are safe.

I doubt you have anything to worry about with solar flares but to keep this post relevant to detecting I will share an experience I had last year. I went out detecting one day and my Se Pro was fine the first couple of hours and then became completely erratic. I could not get it to settle down no matter what I did. Every minute or so, it would go bonkers, then settle and then start over again. I had driven a couple of hours to get to this spot so I would be damned if I didn't hunt out the rest of the day. About an hour later the weather changed and a few clouds moved in. I then saw the lightning for the first time that day and noticed that my machine would go crazy every time I saw the lightning, which was so far away that I could barely see it at this point. I could not believe that my machine was so sensitive that it had started being affected hours before I could actually see the lightning move in. Detectors are clearly very sensitive but I would never have thought they could be affected by weather that far away. I would assume that a solar flare could have the same effect, but I am no expert. I have heard similar stories but I have never experienced that with a White's detector. A lightning strike is millions and millions times stronger than a solar flare and completely at opposite ends of the radio spectrum. Lighting EMI is much like power line EMI but much stronger. Solar flares are mostly up in the micro wave section of the spectrum and if interferrence is experienced while detecting, it is more likely to cause noise in the wireless link to your headphones.
