Mercury Dimes finally found

Well, I have been detecting since mid June 2013 and i have found a standing liberty quarter, a Franklin half, a Walking Liberty half, 20 Roosevelt silver dimes, several Washington silver quarters, silver and gold rings, silver and gold charms and lots of other goodies including a 1830's pewter Eagle button.....but NO MERCS!! We hunt mostly old lots where houses used to be years ago and some of the lots have been here since the 20's. The trouble is, that my hunting buddies, mostly Blind Squirrel has hunted these lots over and over again. The pickings are pretty slim, no matter where we go and new virgin places are almost non-existent. Today, Blind Squirrel and I went out to one of his lots that he said had not been hunted THAT MANY times, I thought, yeah, right. Well, he told me that a tree, actually the only tree on this half of a block had yielded some coins before. I made a beeline for the tree, hunting on the way to it. I dug a couple of old style pull tabs on the way and no coins. I finally got over by the tree and VOILA....using my V3I with a 6x10 eclipse, I got a solid 80 VDI and a really sweet tone. The ground was almost hard as a rock, but I dug down the 5 inches my detector told me that the target was and dumped the shovel full of dirt. I did not even have to use the pinpointer, the edge of the coin was in the dumped dirt. I picked it up and knew it was silver, but had to wipe it off a little until I saw those wings and I knew the curse was broken. I ran over to Blind Squirrel to let him tell me the date and mint, as I did not have my glasses on. It was a 1936 D. He told me to be sure and check the hole, so I went back and checked the hole and nothing else was there. I turned to my left and within 3 ft of the first Merc was the second one a 1937 plain. Mercs may not be much for some of you guys that find the seated coins, the standing liberties , barbers and all that , but in a hunted out West Texas i was elated to find 2 mercs in one day within 3 ft of each other and within about 3 minutes of each other. On the other hand, though, I did not find another coin the whole afternoon. Blind squirrel found 5 wheats, then newest was 1947 and 2 were 1927 and the other 2 were so corroded that cleaning will tell us later. I am betting that they too were in the '20's. We did not find much, but when you have been cursed by the Elusive Merc for almost 3 years, it was a successful hunt for me. This is how they came out of the ground also, in their natural west texas black coating. The first one I found was not cleaned, just wiped my finger across it to see the date. The other I just used a magnifying glass i had in my treasure bag.

The first Merc I ever found were in my side yard and like you, were within 6 inches of each other. Found them with a V3i as well. Found them on hunted to death ground that I had been over time and again, not only with the V3i, but with an AT Pro and a Bouinty Hunter... Just goes to show you, they're never 'hunted out'...

They really are beautiful coins

Nice catch! More to come.. Someone said, where you find Wheat Pennies, you'll find Silver... I suppose that's true!

Congrats! I have been shut out from silver entirely since I returned to detecting 4 years ago. In the '70s it was nothing to find silver nearly every time out. Just going to keep on digging.

Shafer44--

Congratulations on your First AND Second Winged Liberty Dimes! I guess we can't tease you about being "Merc-Less" any more. Have you dug any Barber or Seated coinage yet? If not, I KNOW that you will....eventually! Best of luck and...

Happy Hunting!

thanks, SC Dirt Fisher. I have found my share of other silver coins and trinkets, but the mercs were eluding me. Happy to have found even one, but 2 in one day was great!!
