Coiltek 6" Mono Tdi coil test against NF Sadie, Miner John 6" folded mono, White's 150 etc..

I've just obtained the new Coiltek 6" mono coil made for the Tdi series detectors. Give me a bit of time and I'll compare it with other small gold specialists like the Miner John folded mono 6", Miner John 9 x 5 folded mono, Nugget Finder Sadie 8 x 5 mono and whatever else I can get my hands on. Pity Coiltek didn't come to the party earlier but they are here now..

First impressions are that it is best mounted on a Minelab lower rod, it comes with mounting hardware for a White's lower, but the design and spacing dictates the use of a rubber washer, I just use the Minelab rod, much better fit..
Quick air test on 1 grain ingot, ten plus centimeters, Tdi Pro with gain at 5, 10us, GB off. Ok so just 4 inches+ with gain at half, that's 4 inches clear signal, whispers out to 15 centimeters + or 6 inches+ on 1 grain ingot. A good start.. those whispers stretched out further than other coils, but early days..
Again I'll do a proper test shortly, first air tests and a bit later hot ground to check stability and ground balancing etc.. different gain setting.. All and Low, etc.
A lot of small gold still to be found and a few decent larger slugs for the lucky few, so small gold coils make sense.

All the best,
Karelian

Just an image of the 1 grain ingot between an Australian 5c coin and US 25c.
Small target in an understatement, electronic panning?

Focusing on small gold, there can only be one winner. Small gold ability combined with decent depth on larger targets may complicate matters.
I'll start small and work my way up.

Looking forward to your 'in depth'(excuse the pun) reviews on these coils, although we dont have any gold nuggets as such here in the UK it helps in possibly using one of these smaller coils for micro jewellery on the beach during the summer months.

Great--looking forward to your results. Has your TDI had any mods done to it?

Thanks for sharing, I've oftened wondered if differences can be noticed with sensitivity on same/similar size coils.

Appreciate the information, this will help me determine if i need to add a smaller coil for extra sensitivity. Currently, my smallest TDI coil is the new Miner John 6"x10" folded. I like this for gold jewelry hunting school yards or soccer fields, good depth yet has decent sensitivity and coverage.

Looking forward to reading all future information of yours,
Paul

The smallest 2 coils i have for the TDI Pro are the Jimmy Folded Mono and the 7.5'' DF,never really needed anything smaller but will be doing more beach detecting this year so maybe a 6'' coil may be a good move.

I do have a 5'' Mono coil on my Mirage Pulse and also a 7'' coil for my Nexus MP,so will see how a smaller coil goes on the TDI.

Yes in answer to doc holiday232, threshold modification to help smooth it out a bit and other tweaks.. easy to use too much gain. Side effects are a bit of ground noise in hot ground so need to reduce gain and take extra care in balancing, but can run 'hot' on the beach with high gain and back breaking depth. Mostly a beach machine 90% and 10% in the goldfields. Mods make sense for the beach but probably best leave machines factory spec if prospecting or using in mostly hot ground, my opinion only. We have a long holiday weekend so I'm electing to stay OFF the roads and avoid the congestion.. Will run tests shortly after..

Just a preliminary air test on first batch of coils, more air tests will be done over the weekend followed a bit later by proper buried targets in hot ground. 1 inch = 2 1/2 cm

Tests were conducted with Tdi Pro, gain max, 10us, Ground balance OFF, Frequency fully to the left (best for emi), ALL conductivity, using Nokia MD11 amplified external speaker.

Coiltek 6" mono Tdi series, 1 grain ingot 11cm/4.25", 0.5 gram gold coin 25cm/10", 1/2 Sovereign Gold coin 35cm/13.75".................................
NF Sadie mono 8 x 6 coil, ..1 grain ingot 12cm/4.75", 0.5 gram gold coin 26cm/10.25" 1/2 Sovereign Gold coin 35cm/13.75"...............................
Miner John 6" f/mono..........1 grain ingot 8cm/3.25,, 0.5 gram gold coin 22cm/8.75" 1/2 Sovereign Gold coin 31cm/12.2"..................................
Miner John 9x5 F/mono 1 grain ingot 8cm/3.25" 0.5 gram gold coin 22cm/8.75" 1/3 Sovereign Gold coin 33 cm/13"

Real in ground tests are what counts but the air tests are still interesting.

Should mention that only measurements recorded as centimeters are spot on, my inches are conversions and are not spot on..
Also when recording target response and distance I am only measuring clear and consistent target responses, not whispers... So the target must consistently be detected, no matter how faint, reliably every sweep. Whispers can be more variable and less reliable, can be missed etc thus they are not recorded as detected depth. I'm using a Nokia MD11 amplified external speaker which is FANTASTIC and compares with my best headphones, excellent on hot days when wearing a wide brim hat or fly net etc.. Great in the bush but too noisy in public spaces.. perfect for coil tests..

Air tests use small targets ranging from 1 grain ingot to one Australian gold half Sovereign. Ground tests will include a couple larger targets so we can better understand depth on bigger targets. For example the Sadie and Coiltek 6" coils both easily detect a metal disk at over one meter in the air, nearly four feet. Obviously big coils are best for large and deep targets but it's important to know what the smaller coils can and can't do. Just adding a bit of context and background.
I'll get the air tests out of the way and move on to the ground testing shortly after that.
All the best,
Karelian

Last of the small coil air tests.

Mini Jimmy 6x4 mono 1 grain 7cm/2.75", 0.5 Gold coin 22cm/8.75", Half Sovereign 24cm/9.5"................................................

Razorback 10x6 mono 1grain 8cm/3.15", 0.5 gold coin 32cm/12.5", half Sovereign 32cm/12.5"...............................................

White's 150 6" mono 1 grain 5cm/2", 0.5 gold coin 22cm/8.75", half Sovereign 27cm/10.5"................................................

Coiltek (older) 6 mono 1 grain 8cm/3.15", 0.5 gold coin 20cm/8", half Sovereign 28cm/11"..................................................

Jimmy Duelfield 10 x 6 1grain 7cm/2.75", 0.5 gold coin 24cm/9.5", half Sovereign 34cm/13.5"............................................

So at this stage the air test winners are;

1 Grain ingot... Nugget Finder Sadie 8 x 6 mono wins at 12cm/4.75" follow in second by the Coiltek 6" mono Tdi Series at 11cm/4.25".

0.5 gram gold coin.. Razorback Longreach mono 10x6 wins at 32cm/12.5", second place to NF Sadie at 26cm/10.25".

1/2 Sovereign coin.. Draw at 35cm/13.75" NF Sadie and Coiltek Tdi 6" mono, second plate to Jimmy duelfield mono at 34cm/13.5".

Ground tests to follow shortly.

thanks for the result. Any chance of tossing in the 10x14 razorback against the winning coil? How about on 0.5g up to 1g?
Again, thanks for taking the time to post these results
