Ground testing, recommendations now or never.

Since I have a large number of coils to test I'm attempting to make it as quick and simple as possible so all targets will be buried. So I only have to focus on changing coils and recording results etc..

I've got a few 0.5 grain gold coins, thinking to bury them all at 6", 8", 10", and 12".
The buckle? Not sure since I want the small coils to have some chance, all the big coils air tested at 2 feet plus.. I'm thinking 18"
Australian 10c coin is almost exactly the same size as US Quarter, so 8" 10" 12" 14" and 16".
Australian 5 c coins are half the size so 8" 10" 12" 14" and 16". Australian penny same as 5c.
Even smaller silver Australian 3 pence at 8" 10" 12" and 14".
Only have one Half Sovereign coin and one 1 grain ingot so...
Half Sovereign will go in at 10", the coils will either detect it or not. 1 grain ingot will be buried at 2". Coils will detect it or not. If detected I'll lift the coil to better estimate depth etc.

Looking to do this soon.

It's great to have someone so willing to work and share the results with the rest of us. I too am looking forward to those results...

Testing will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, Thursday results posted. Images are of the location where the testing will be conducted.
Hot ground.. expect a 'fraction' of the air test depth.. it's that nasty. Reduced gain.. careful ground balancing.. essential for smooth stable operation. European or North American users can expect 'better' results since the mineralization is not as extreme. The coils will all suffer equally. If you click on the images you'll be left in no doubt about the ground.. iron stone, hot rocks, dirty mineralized quartz etc. Real gold country..

I was at the beach and the 'white dry sand' depth is almost the same as the air tests, no ground balance required so it was off and gain near max. Wet sand and still no ground balance required, just a small reduction in gain and maybe increase pulse delay to 12 or 15.. smooth operation.

Goldfields are much more challenging in terms of taking the time to get your setting right and tuning the machine to the conditions.

Wish me luck.

Yup, looks like hot ground, bet if you run a magnet across ground it will get full fast....lol Looking forward to results, thanks....

Testing was delayed by rain and thunderstorms, just completed today so results to follow shortly. Weather effectively destroyed my schedule..
Moisture had made bad ground worse, all those salts.. all coils suffered equally.

Razorback Longreach and Nugget Finder Sadie are both designed for Australian conditions.. excellent performances. Miner John folded mono coils are very stable and quiet with good performance also, excellent EMI resistance. New Coiltek Tdi Series a big improvement over older Goldstalker Series.. Winners and losers? We all have our own preferences so I'm not making any nominations.
All the best,
Karelian

Karelian,
Thank you for taking the time to give us all some additional perspective about relative coil performance under controlled conditions.
I very much appreciate your efforts to help us all. I have a dual field 6x10 Jimmy I was thinking about selling, but think maybe I will just hang onto it based on your findings....

An interesting side note, The Sadie coil is the only coil that was in either 1st or 2nd position in every test.

I might want to find one of those baby's....

Thanks Karelian for the hard work and good reporting. Are you planning any tests with the stock coil and the RazorBack 11" mono?

Yes doc holiday232, larger coil ground tests were done at the same time with the White's 12 Oz mono, White's 12 Duelfield, Digger 14x8, Detech 15x10, Detech 11x6 mono, Miner John 11x7 mono, Miner John 11x7 folded mono. Results recorded in my notebook so just need to review the results and type them up. Been catching up this weekend with chores and house guests etc, results will be posted shortly.

Stephenscool asked about larger coils so I made sure to include them in the ground testing. I'll be organized soon and will make sure to get the results out.

All the best,
Karelian
