2nd voyage with the Max and my first silver coin

Ok I am starting to understand the language of the machine a little more. Actually I had a great experience in heavy iron too. Went to a public park in a section that really isn't used anymore and has been blocked off for almost 60 years. Its a strip about 50'L x 15'W. I have hit it several times with the AT Pro and a couple times with my Sov GT. Found many old Wheaties, buffalo and merc and rosey dimes. Now it is in the drought stage for finds. Nevertheless, in a two hour time frame, the AT Max came through and surprised me with my first piece of silver = 1952 Rosey. I also found 7 wheat cents which really surprised me too. All from the 1940's and 50's. Heck, I'll take it.

So I run into a patch of heavy iron (sounds like a Geiger Counter getting close and closer to radiation ) but hear this little high blip (did I mention you have to scan slow?) wow really slowing down and almost performing a wiggle of the coil brought out a nice high tone out of the iron. The audio illusion of raising right on up and out of the iron. WOW I thought, this is nice. Solid 82 I'm digging! Out pops a wheat cent! Scan a few inches through the iron and hear another high blip. Come to a slow crawl and wiggle the coil and sure enough another nice steady 82 rises up out of the iron. Heck, I'm digging....another greenie wheat cent!

Coins were 3 - 5" deep. There were a few that were a little deep maybe at 6" - 6.5".

My Settings:
GB at 94
3-5 bars of sensitivity. Anytime I encountered a patch of iron I would reduce the sensitivity to 3. Otherwise I kept it at 5 bars.

-3 on the threshold. This made a BIG difference in calming things down. I know there are some that will say to run with a very slight hum in the background. However a negative threshold this evening made for a much more pleasurable hunt. Maybe I will in the future as I learn more about the machine but right now, its staying negative.

5x8 coil - I truly love this coil  its like a laser in iron and heavy trash.

iron disc set at 20 but I then turned it to 30 as there was so much junk it was driving me batty. This quiet things down too. With it at this setting, I didn't hear so much of the loud " bug zapping" sounds of detected iron.

Interesting.....I too decrease my sensitivity to around 3-4 bars in junky areas, and if I am doing tot lots, so I can get a little closer to the equipment. Another trick I do in tot lots, is use my digger, and quickly remove sand that is close to equipment, and then scan it. Lots of times I get a coin or 2.

Love to see nice finds and report of finds coming out of trash. Particularly, from a spot that's been hit hard. Good hunting! HH jim tn

Thanks for mentioning Threshold. I had forgotten about it. Old habits, I guess.

If all goes well, I am going to take the Max to the ocean this weekend.

Stay tuned...
