Beginner tips / tricks / settings for the G2
Posted by: earthlypotluck

Allow me to introduce myself... My name is Jim aka EPL and I live in the tax-u-to-death state of CT lol. I have used a Sov GT for the past year and have made some great finds in the old coin dept. Looking for a detector that will compliment the GT, I settled on the Teknetics G2. (I am still in the process of finalizing the deal) Please be respectful. Thank you - Jim

Question: As my post states, what are some good beginner tips / tricks / settings / for the G2.

all metal disciminate setings, to discriminate out boby pins and small iron i use sens15 and threshould -15 this will ignore a boby pin at 1.5" and hit hard on gold I am thinking of spots like schools parks most people think max sensitivity but in this case less is more you can have a nail sitting over the gold and not hear the nail but get the gold I am thinking of using this method for a few spots i know preliminary tests have showed promising results, yes you will dig tabs yes you will miss some coins but if its gold welll,,,

Right on Gunner,

Since the G2 came out everyone has praised it quietness and ability to run at max sensitivity. So Far Your the only other person who has stated less is more.
Its like the headlights in the fog low does better than high. The only time I crank up the G2 is when the signal is deep and I want a little more info.
That being said your not playing with the same apple as the Gb Pro or G2. My Gb Is saturated audio as well as the one your testing and seems to have much higher gain levels. Most the time I cant run over 50% due to EMI. But the saturated audio is easier to hear the deep targets with.
This brings us to another point, G2 not being effected as badly by EMI. This simply is not the case it is effected just the same except something in the VCO or software is different and tends to cancels out the signal in disc.
So Here is my proof. Crank up your G2 in Disc (Nice Hunh) Now switch to all metal. The threshold is very choppy (if emi is present0. The machine is picking up Emi.

Here is how I set up.
Turn power to 50% ground balance switch to disc crank it up tell you get emi or not.
Switch back to all metal and reduce power untel the threshold just starts to smooth a little. Now the electronics are functioning at peak for the Emi Conditions that day.
As Gunner Stated very wisely sometimes less is more!!!!
Good Post

Jim

thats right GOdigit if you get that nervouse jiter in all metal its time to turn it back i get a bit of emi as a power cable is buried near by and i can hear it stuter and jitter i also found 55 was a good setting all depends on the strenght of emi most of the vidioes show the gold bug crancked to 100 man do you want to dig every tiny piece of gumm wrapper not me .

Good info....thanks. HHN/T

Hey Jim, I live in CT also and use a sov gt and G2. They compliment each other well. My best advice would be to get the 5" coil asap if you hunt in any trashy sites. The 5 and 5x10 have plucked out some real nice buttons and coins from a couple of my cellar holes recently. These are sites that have been HEAVILY hunted by me and many others over the past 3 years (that I know of) with many top of the line machines. What part of CT are you in?

Hi Cuzzi,
I bought the G2 with the stock and 5". The 5" looks like a nice little sniper for the iron sites.

For all of us, our personal decisions for settings might not 'fit' with others opinions/decisions. In time, you'll settle on yours.

What I can tell you, Jim, is that you have a bit of advantage over some detector operators because you use the Sovereign. I say that because the Sov. is kind of at-its-best with a slower, more deliberate sweep speed, and I find the G2 w/5" DD to be the same. It makes a good combination.

Question: As my post states, what are some good beginner tips / tricks / settings / for the G2.
I can respect the opinions of others below, but I do beg to differ a little.

I've been at this sport for a good while now and, generally, I prefer to work my Sensitivity level as high as possible while maintaining stability. I reduce it only if things get a bit unstable and noisy.

As for comparing the jittery chatter in All Metal and the calm (usually) operation in the Disc. mode, I don't let one mode necessarily determine the settings for the other. Just because the All Metal mode, with a 'proper' slight audio Threshold hum, get just a little raspy or sputtery at times does NOT mean the Disc. mode also is and only the filtering and 'process' settings deal with that 'noise.' Does it? Sure, it might, but the Disc. mode operates the Disc. model is designed to and isn't a total reflection of the operation in the All Metal mode.

To point to how different the two modes are, consider this. A slight variance in the Ground balance setting in the All Metal mode easily is recognizable in the All Metal mode. The Discriminate mode, however, works quite w ell, and without much 'noise' from falsing, even if the GB setting is reduced dramatically as most models have a problem with. So, quite simply, the Disc. mode's Ground balance function is quite different than the All Metal mode's GB function.

Therefore, I don't believe the Disc. mode's stability issues are necessarily a hand-in-hand reflection of what occurs in the All Metal mode with regard to stability and the Sensitivity control. I pick the mode I want to search in. Set the peak or ideal settings I want for that choice of search mode, then hunt away. That's my method of approach to success, and in my 48th year of avid metal detecting, I can guarantee you I have experienced ample success throughout.

Thank you Monte for your input. I am surprised to hear this (in bold) as I have / had the impression the G2 was more of a quick(er) sweeping machine. I most certainly thank you for that information as I will certainly employ that method in the field. HH - Jim

Sweeping a fast and slow speeds brings out targets that the other speed missed. Its almost like having two machines just by varying sweep speed!!.
