CW button ?

I've had this button for a while now. I honestly have no idea what school it is. WMI with the union shield are on the front and "Scovill Manufacturing company, Waterbury" on the back in a channel. I'm assuming it's pre-CW because of the way it's made. Anyone have any clue if this is a variation of the Western Military Inst. button? I saw on the net some guy dug one in VA.

Would like to know any info, including value, as I would like to sell it.

thanks,
Wayne

Well, I guess I figured it out - somewhat. An excavated sample sold from one of the relic dealers sold for almost $300.

Your's appears to be a post civil war era IMHO. Appears to be non-dug. CCH

Maybe I missed something but his doesnt show the same button. I was told 1850's because of the way it's made. No one is going to pay $300 for a dug post war button. I put a $200 or best offer price tag on it.

thanks for taking the time to research it.

EWTaylor -

Several different WMI buttons shown in the link are from the same time period that you said someone dated your button. And yes, your button is not among those. There were obviously different variants over the years. So ... maybe we will keep researching and hopefully be able to assist you .... There are lots of CW buffs on this site who can probably add more insight.

Thanks for posting.

Both Albert and McGunn/Brazelton note this button (SU 430) without comment. The Western Military Institute became associated with the University of Nashville in 1855. Operation of the school ended early in 1862 when the Union Army captured Nashville. Scovill continued to make uniform buttons until 1962. Could they have made some post war buttons for a veterans organization? We may never know.

Whatever its lineage, it's pretty.
