How do I lower the sound of iron nail hits?

Yesterday while detecting an old farm I was barraged by loud iron nail hits. I tried Iron Volume 0 but it was still too loud. Is there a work around? I tried notching but I don't want to notch out the iron. I want to still hear the iron and anything next to it.

Are you using a program with fulltones, or another with 3, 4, or 5 tones (ie iron volume does not work on fulltones)? Also are we talking about low tone iron hits, or high tone falsing from the iron?

I was using 4 tones.
It was a constant low sound base drum type of beating when going over iron hits.

i'm not sure if this is what you are talking about but if in any tones but full tones you can lower iron volume. you might be able to lower the tone but I think it is at the lowest tone as it is.

Tony,
It is not necessary to hear the iron to detect with Deus and find the goods.

Now, if a person is looking for a site, maybe where an old house once sat.
Yes, listening for ferrous and how dense it is can help person locate.

Disc level 6.4 using multi tonw will get rid of most nails,,not rail road spikes axe heads, etc.

Running full tones, using 9" coil running disc at 2.0 will quiet the Deus on a,ot of nails bits, etc.
Using the 11" coil I find disc setting of around 2.5-3.0 to work well.

And of course when you are out in a site you can play with your disc some while using full tones and see what I am referring to.

I'm with Squirrel. A little bit of disc can be very helpful. Not sure why a lot a people have an aversion to discrimination. I have found that a judicious amount improves my number of good finds. The Deus is a very fast machine. You can disc out a lot of the small iron with out fear of missing a nearby good target.

I'm slowly starting to come over to that train of thought on discrim of course I hunt with out it trying to locate sites but I have been experimenting with it on known sites no more than 6 though.

I'm with you guys now, I use between 3.5-6.5 discrim and have been having great success. If I am iffy I can have another program set up with no discrim, one of the joys of the Deus.

Wouldn't it be better to notch out the iron sound rather than disc. it out? The more disc one uses the lesser depth one gets.
But if one notches out a specific amount of iron, the Deus just isn't letting you hear that much iron you've notched out.
At least that's how I understand it.

Tony, you will not notice ANY loss of depth if you use a small amount of Disc. When you use Notch, it is the same as Disc. If you Notch 0 to 10, you might as well just set the Disc to 10. I like to use a little bit of Disc because that allows me to use the Iron Volume function. If you use 0 Disc or any Disc less than 2 or 3, the Iron Volume control is useless. If you don't care to adjust the iron volume, then it is not an issue.

So I like to use a little bit of Disc, usually around 6 to 8. That will Disc out most small iron. I use Multitones rather than Full Tones so I often will assign 8 through 30 to the tone of 120. That make everything below 30 sound like iron. You can think of that as "tone notching".
