CTX Help!!!!

Hi, I went out detecting today for 3 hours. I checked the battery compartment for cleanliness and grit beforehand. It was good. I must have done something wrong. While detecting whenever I lifted it up horizontal it would say it didn't detect the coil and then restart. I thought it might have been a loose connection. It still functioned. Later I went home and took the battery off.

THE BATTERY COMPARTMENT WAS FULL OF WATER!!

I immediately dried everything with a can of air. One part of the battery and the corresponding plate in the CTX housing had blue stuff. I figured electrolysis. I took a toothbrush and cleaned both of them. I used canned air on both again. Then I used contact cleaner on both and brushed both the battery and the ctx plates. Then I used contact cleaner again on both and inclined the ctx downward and the batter face down on a flat surface.

Is there anything else I can do??? I have the spare battery using regular AA batteries.

It works normal with the AA Pack. It tests out well with my test targets and my wedding ring.

Does NOT work well with the original battery. I assume there is still water in the battery somewhere. It tries to turn on but is sporadic and then shuts off. To try and save the original battery I put it into a zip loc baggy full of rice. It's a trick that also saves submerged cell phones. The rice acts as a desiccant and sucks all moisture. I will see how the original battery works in a day or two.

Also, I broke out the new gaskets. My guess is when I checked the battery before I left to go to the beach that I unseated the old gasket because everything was dry and clean at that time.

Is there more I can do??

HELP!!

Haven't seen this myself but I believe you will find a little circuit board inside the battery pack and you may find corrosion on the leads/connection to the board. I recently saw a picture of the board on one of the posts here I believe..... Found it, here is the link... http://www.findmall.com/read.php?86,1859187,2081207,page=5#msg-2081207
You may want to inspect this board and connections.

Walk near it, swing over it and understand what the machine is telling you....

In the future put a layer of di-electric grease on the gasket to deter water from getting past. The tesoro tiger shark comes with packs from the factory for just that purpose.

Always use the AA battery pack in the water. Take apart the lithium pack and let it dry out.

Hi Nolan, thanks for the advice of using the AA battery pack in the water! I've used the lithium pack for 10 hours straight and it had plenty of juice left. Do you know how long the AA pack will last?

I use rechargeable NiMH energizer batteries and they last pretty close to that long!

I have owned my ctx for about 9 months now and have never had it in any water, but i have a trip to the beach (myrtle beach) planed in a couple of weeks and was planing on using the ctx in the surf about waist deep but i have been reading about the battery seals leaking and major damage. I bought new seals from treasure hunting outfitters, new grey ghost amphibian headphones! Now my question is would a good coating of DI-ELECTRIC grease made for automotive bulbs etc. work for water damage from shorting out and also instead of using the rechargable pack , I would use pack with alkaline replaceable batteries instead of rechargeable pack . Any suggestions please (don,t want to kill it on my first water hunt Thanks jimmy

I have not seen anyone post about leakage once the old seals are replaced with the new ones. When the battery is replaced it has to be seated properly. Once in a while the battery will hang up a little. If this happens it can still be latched but it will probably leak. Inspect the battery closely before you latch it down. If it doesn't slide into place smoothly and evenly remove the battery and start over. Sometimes I have to wiggle the battery just a little and then it slides in and looks even from every angle.

Your battery is as good as dead... Well the cct board etc on the batteries will be eaten away/ damaged.

I like the thought though... AA pack when in the water; just in case. And keep the main pack for dry land... Smart thinking...
