Missing threshold

Been messing with 17 inch coil for awhile , today i opened up with ferrous all the way down at the beach. Interesting and surprised at all the iron down in the sand. Had no problem hearing targets thru the iron dug alot of deep coins 10 - 15 inches however i could not get a threshold ? Anybody have this with the big coil happen with ferrous wide open. thanks jimmy

Stupid question by me. What do you mean by having the ferrous all the way down? I used my 17" today at the beach for the second time and I think I'm done with it. I can't stand pinpointing with it. As for losing threshold I can only imagine that you had discriminated out the lowest area on the screen which in a heavily "ironed" beach will cause nulling(In my experience). I run mine wide open at the beach normally but my favorite beach program is Jay's gold pattern. The sounds on it just match my hearing level/style. The silver tone on it is so unmistakable.

hi skate no i had screen wide open with ferrous tones set to hear all iron , heard all the grunts and low iron tones plus good targets just couldnt hear the threshold even turned it up to 50 maybe iron is knocking threshold out.?

Thats my thought. I just run the beach program or Gary's beach program and use P2 which is the wide open version and then check it in the P1 when I'm over a target. Off the top of my head I think the last line horizontally is knocked out on mine which causes a null when over iron so It's not 100% wide open. I think I'm going to resell the 17". I've had it 2 weeks and the pinpointing is not for me. I dorked around with a quarter today for 5 minutes and dug a 24"x24" hole until I got it. With the 11" I'm in and out.

pin pointing is a problem but if you use the wiggle back method from 2 different directions it gets easier wiggle back one way then turn 90 degrees and wiggle back again should put you right on

Ok Jim....if you TRULY have the ENTIRE SCREEN CLEAR...check it CAREFULLY,the second pattern has a strip or two at the very bottom that needs to be cleared if you are to be in a truly wide open screen. With NOTHING discriminated out you should be hearing threshold or targets, whatever the targets may be(bad sand,nails,rings...whatever!) Somewhere along the line you have SOMETHING disced out. Disappearance of threshold means two things...nulling on disced targets or reporting on audible targets.
The threshold goes to "30" BTW....

Thanks will check tomorrow but even if the 2 bottom lines are disced out why would i not be getting threshold. I know alot of iron is sounding off under the big coil thought maybe that was killing the threshold. Tried pitch tone but without threshold i went back to normal.

Rsarge's method is right on. But I'm with you - I like the 11" better after giving the 17" a good chance. I found the detector with the 11" is so much lighter and maneuverable that it wins for me. Also mine developed a coil cable tear under the strain relief. Probably all of them will get this unless it is a faulty materials kind of thing as it gets a lot of stress whereas the 11" has less stress on it. The big stress is when the coil flops over against the shaft. I was storing mine that way in the car... Minelab just replaced mine - I have yet to try it again. The sell on the 17" was supposed to be you get more coverage with a swing but I think I swing the 11" twice as fast and I use the harness to relieve the arm stress on both.

On the threshold thing you might try reducing the Volume Gain to see if things improve.

As far as pinpointing with the 17".
I get a dig-able signal and use the wiggle back method and mark the spot a few inches in front of the coil .
Then when I dig I use that mark as the far side of the hole, take out about a 6" diameter plug and the coin is usually in the plug .
So with my prosses when I mark in front of the coil the coin is actually inbetween the Minlab sticker and my mark right in frount of the coil after using the wiggle back method.
Before I figured this out I dug some big holes, thinking the object was actually in front of my coil, so give it time and find your spot
Give it a try and tell us what works for you

Just a thought. Try changing your pitch.

IDXMonster:
My CTX threshold goes to 50 same a Saltwater Jim's. I think the eTrack is the same. Do we have a special CTX ? Just curious.

 Yeah I knew I had misspoken somewhere but couldn't recall where...thanks for the catch,it goes to 50.

OK, I'll bite. If the threshold goes to 50 and volume limit and volume gain stop at 30 how does a target break through the threshold if it is set above 30?

TC...I don't think they correlate like a traditional silent search machine, but you bring up a question that should be clarified. This is where I wish we had more technical info straight from the manufacturers. Maybe a clear understanding is in the manual which I've never read.
