There was a problem with the on / off button. Does anyone have a keyboard layout (did somebody peel off a block with buttons) I want to put a mechanical button, but I'm afraid to break tracks

Huh?
You want to replace the CTX power button with a mechanical switch? Nooooooo....
I've never heard of a power button issue.
Maybe open up the unit without damaging anything and parallel the button with a magnetic momentary relay glued to the side of the case. Then just bring a magnet close to turn it on/off. There are also button repair kits for the contacts - I've used this on music synthesizer buttons/keys.

They say the new repair center is fast and fair. You dropped the coins for the CTX so I would bite the bullet and send it in for repair. Just my thoughts. Good luck.

Not doubting whether you are clever enough to do so, replace the on off switch with other but you can get whole front control panel part from Minelab (hopefully they'll sell it to whoever wants one):

or
as suggested , it's wise to send it to Minelab to repair it for you.
All the best with what ever you choose.

I suspect the button switches are surface mount parts on the board shown on the link above.
They are typically less than 50 cents a piece from Digikey or Mouser. If you have the guts, take your unit apart and replace the switch.
While you're at it get the part number of the LCD and maybe I can find one that is better in full sunlight.

As I understand it - LCD is LQ035Q7DB05R original Sharp LCD Panel with touch

My spare just has TPL 66939cm but can not find any reference..
