A great and beautiful day out in area 61 in N. California. I hit the small nugget (0.16 gram) with my ATX and my bud hit the 1800's military button with his MXT Pro w 12" coil...check it out.

That's a great find BK thanks for posting it.

That button your friend found actually reveals a bit more about that area and who was over that piece of ground in those early days. It would be interesting to see if you can find more things like that to try to get a better lay of the land on what their activities were in that area (just riding through or looking for gold). They must have camped out somewhere along that stretch I would think.

Very Interesting finds BK, thanks for sharing them.

Cool find bearcat,

Goes to show gold can still be found, Glad to see the ATX found this second piece from this mountain.

The military button your friend found is a keeper, Nice find it's a treat when relics/coins from the gold rush era surface makes the hobby even more interesting.

Congrats!

Nice to see some gold again! Those sweet little audio signals sure find some tiny pieces of gold! It's always a pleasure to see videos at this time of year, when cabin fever sets in.Give your buddy a high-five for his great looking button. Was there some civil war activity in that area at one time?

No official civil war activity in California....in fact Calif. Was owned by Mexico and Russia and we kind a took it form Mexico in 1850.
There were funny little things that happened between sympathizers on both sides ....but that's about it.

Cheers,

Tye

I haven't seen a button in that great detail and shape. Again, that is a really nice find.

I wonder if their is any way of finding out what division or company that button was attached to or did all of the soldiers have that same style of button in the military back then? Maybe a bit of research might reveal a story behind it. I do know when I was in the military, we made log entries on our activities and it's stored somewhere in the archieves I'm sure.

The reason I'm asking this is as Tye mentioned the states took California in about the same time frame as when that button was made and it was found close to the Northern Border of Claifornia wasn't it? Maybe that division was marking off the northern border to establish the boundries of California. As again based on what Tye mentioned that button and that era really seems to be at the same time frame wouldn't you think?

I guess now you know why I like Relic hunting so much, you can find a lot histroy/activities behind it from people back in the day by what they leave behind, i would be all over that button like White On Rice, hehe

Sorry BK, nice nugget find, I do like finding the yellow stuff as well. Great video.

:)

Yea; it is possible that the military was following around/guiding the geological survey guys for the mine records. Many mines in that area have historical records...this is just a guess though. Could be a former military guy just doing some mining. The button was found on a short bedrock ledge just below one of the mine shafts...like a good resting plce to sit or sleep. Really hard to tell...but I just love those historical things too just to imagine what happened there.

It could also be related to the forming of the State of California with the military being involved in that. It was about 20 miles south of Oregon border...this is of course is befrore all the communist took over California in recent years, Lol - had to get that in! :surprised:

No CW activity that I know of John...just the Indian Wars and stuff like that...button could be related to the forming of the State of Cali of the military doing surveys etc...
Man, that would be tough for me to live where you do...but I think you make up for lost time pretty good in the months you do hunt with all your awesome finds!

Thanks Paul...yea we actually find lot of stuff but mostly crap, but we have all together found 6 pick axe heads that are in good shape and several old stove parts...most we have hauled out of there.

We now joke about going relic hunting and maybe we will find a nugget as a bonus...Lol

BK...

It would be very interesting to find out the years of manufacture for that button. Maybe too broad to be useful but...some buttons were only made for a few years
And if that is the case and it dates back to pre 1850 then.... Somebody has some explaining to do ... Because that would mean US troop(s) on foreign soil.
Which is what happened officially only latter...

Let us know if your buddy does chase it down....

Cheers,

Tye

The button was manufactured from 1857-1863. General service button looks like.

Thanks BK....

That makes a lot of sense....the US had barely taken ownership of a California during that time frame.....lots for the Army to
do around those parts at that time....

Nice piece of history !

Tye
