Rutus Alter 71 users

I don’t see a Rutus group in here yet. Who has the Alter 71 out there?

There are quite a few RA71's out there in the USA...folks Imported them on their own...
Few Forums out there too and the inevitable ' Face Ache' platforms (UK / Euro based)

Its a good machine. I had one on Field Test back in 2017 and it is a 'clever' machine from a small outfit on a shoestring budget (no fancy movies of knights peering into holes or guys with yellow brimmed hats flinging away black detectors!)
Two aspects of the detector I didn't care for: (a) the black and white older screen display (b) ergonomics weren't great for me

If Rutus ever do come into a huge budget then look out other makers!!!

I like my Rutus. It's a really good machine.
I've got a few other detectors to compare it's performance to, and it compares well.

I particularly like the sound it makes on deep coins in the deep/mixed mode.
That, and I can lower the frequency to specifically go after silver in bad ground.

The only ding I give it, is that (on deep targets) the graphical display really doesn't give nearly as much useful info as machines like the Golden Mask 5.
So I just just use the sounds....and watch the bouncing TID 'range' to decide....and that works out pretty well.

Like mentioned in virtually every review, the build quality is really very high.
No shaft wobble whatsoever, and just feels overall 'rugged'.
The only thing I might want improved there would be the 'fiddley' battery cover latch mechanism.

Like Des implied above, smaller companies (like Rutus and GM) can't just throw buckets full of money at an unlimited advertising budget, especially for such a narrow, enthusiasts market.
They have to rely largely on a good reputation spread by 'word of mouth' advertising....so the detector has to be really good and/or better than most to start with.

How can I get larger iron to register higher on the scale rather than have it come in at 01 just like old nails. I do run dual mode, but it would be nice to be able to identify a larger iron relic. A friend had just dug a canister shot and the Rutus made it look like it could have been something I would just walk over.

I've had my Alter 71 for two years now. I ordered it new from Detecnicks Ltd. in England and also sent it back for software updates. They have been a great dealer to work with. It's become my primary detector, coming from a Fisher F75 LTD. I'm especially a fan of the adjustability of settings and build quality.

I don't typically hunt for iron objects, mainly coins and similar non-ferrous relics, but I do dig some iron from time to time. In my experience, the Alter 71 does a good job of telling me when it's an iron object rather than a coin, though I occasionally get fooled by a washer, square nail, or larger iron. For me, iron signals are usually pretty different for a small, nail-sized piece compared to larger pieces of iron. For example, I won't dig most nail signals with low numbers, but if I get a signal in the 20s or 30s (on the 120 point scale), I'll often dig it up to find something like a pair of pliers or larger chunk of agricultural iron. As I mentioned these larger iron pieces will sometimes give a higher, non-ferrous signal, but not pure like a coin or brass object will. I guess I haven't noticed iron objects act like you have observed, but maybe I would if I dug more of those signals. Perhaps it is an effect of the particular soils you hunt in?
